Job Title: Corporate Health and Safety Officer
Ref: Nuneaton 5279790
Pay rate: £21.47 per hour PAYE
Role length: Anticipated 6 months
Working arrangements: Part time hours – Hybrid working; you must maintain regular presence at the office and surrounding sites
Additional arrangements: Must be willing and able to travel to various sites across the borough, with access to suitable motorised transport
Role
We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Health & Safety Advisor to support the delivery of high standards of occupational health, safety, and welfare across the services. You will need to be an experienced health and safety professional with strong knowledge of legislation, risk assessments, audits, and training delivery ideally within local government.
Key responsibilities
* Work with managers and senior leaders to ensure timely completion of H&S actions
* Carry out audits, inspections, and accident investigations across sites and services
* Provide clear, practical advice on risk management, compliance, and health & safety responsibilities
* Support the development and implementation of robust H&S systems and policies
* Deliver training, Toolbox Talks, and awareness sessions tailored to service needs
* Monitor compliance with relevant legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations
* Assist with the investigation of incidents and support risk assessments (e.g. COSHH, DSEAR)
* Prepare reports and advise on trends, claims, and legislative changes
* Liaise with external bodies such as the HSE and Public Health, and engage with staff and union reps to promote a positive safety culture
What the client is looking for
* Level 6 NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or relevant equivalent or willing to obtain
* Qualification in training or willing to obtain
* Health and safety knowledge and experience
* Risk assessments and safe systems of work experience
* Experience of undertaking health and safety related audits
* Experience of working within local government or a unionised environment
* Experience of designing and delivering effective health and safety training at all levels
* Good knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation and the ability to apply and interpret it accordingly
* Skilled in a range of training techniques and methods
* Good standard of IT skills, including all Microsoft Packages
* Ability to challenge existing ideas, and use analytical skills to find innovative solutions
* Ability to keep detailed and accurate records, extracting information and compiling reports
