Data Centre Shift Technician - Critical Environment

Overview:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Shift Technician to join a leading provider of data centre services. This role is ideal for a skilled and proactive engineer with a strong background in mission-critical environments, seeking career progression into leadership and high-responsibility operations within a state-of-the-art data centre facility.
You will support the Shift Leader in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of data centre infrastructure. This includes ensuring the effective delivery of planned and reactive works, maintaining service uptime, and managing operational risk.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate all Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) systems in a safe, efficient, and competent manner, including HV switching (training provided if required).
Support or deputise for the Shift Leader as required, including managing critical incidents and staff coordination.
Conduct inspections, maintenance, and troubleshooting across a broad range of plant and equipment, including:
HV/LV electrical systems
UPS, DRUPS and generators
CRAC units, AHUs, chillers and cooling infrastructure
BMS and lighting control systems
Fire detection and suppression systems
Ensure subcontractors deliver works in line with permits (PTW), MOPs/SOPs, and safety procedures.
Maintain site documentation including logs, permits, fault reports, and technical assessments.
Assist in reviewing, drafting, and updating method statements and emergency operating procedures.
Proactively identify risks, service improvements, and training opportunities for yourself and the team.
Core Systems/Infrastructure You'll Work With:
Building Management Systems (BMS)
Lighting control and CMMS
Chillers, DFUs, FCUs, AHUs, ACUs
Boilers and heating systems
Emergency lighting, fire suppression and detection
LV/HV electrical infrastructure
Pumps, VFDs, PDU and switchgear
Requirements:
Minimum 5 years' experience in a data centre or critical environment (e.g. banking, healthcare, military).
HNC/HND in electrical or mechanical engineering, or recognised apprenticeship.
HV Authorised Person (or willing to attain).
Strong working knowledge of technical compliance, risk assessment and engineering controls.
Confident communicator with excellent report writing and IT skills.
Strong team player with a high level of integrity, reliability, and initiative.
Flexible and willing to undertake shift work and off-site training as required.
Desirable:
IOSH or similar H&S qualification
Experience leading or mentoring technical teams under pressure
Familiarity with CAFM systems and client reporting
