We are welcoming applications from Band 6 Midwives and or band 5 midwives who have completed their preceptorship programme.

You will have responsibility to provide holistic woman/birthing people/baby centred midwifery care; this may be leading midwifery care or working in collaboration with the multi- disciplinary team that
advocates pregnancy as a normal physiological life event. The midwife will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for the women/birthing people/baby. The role will encompass taking responsibility for the management/ leadership of the ward/department/ community/transitional care caseload on a shift-by-shift basis. To collaborate with external agencies and consumer groups.
The Midwife (Band 6) participates in the supervision and teaching of staff as well as being a Mentor/Assessor for midwifery students

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It is an exciting time at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital as maternity, neonatal, critical care and theatre services will be moving to the brand new Acute Services Block (ASB) and New Ward Block in Autumn 2025.

Through this work, the Trust will be able to increase capacity, improve sustainability and efficiency, maintain and improve quality standards and support patient-centred clinical services. Care will be delivered in modern, uplifting and fit for purpose environments, that will also enhance the patient and staff experience.

The maternity services that will be moving to the new clinical buildings are antenatal ward, antenatal services, delivery suit and obstetric theatres, postnatal ward, day assessment unit, triage unit, bereavement suites and transitional care.

Promote the wellbeing and safeguarding of children and young people by implementing the Trust’s policy and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.

Assess, plan implement and evaluate care women/birthing people/babies for a defined caseload, using evidence to rationalise prescribed care.

Develop link with all care agencies to facilitate seamless approach to maternity care.

Practice within boundaries of autonomy as described by the NMC Code 2015.

Review practices to reduce clinical risk. Record and report any untoward incidents and take action to avoid further incidents.

Promote health and wellbeing through practice and education of women/birthing people, relatives, carers and staff

Support student midwives and other healthcare professional as a mentors and sign off mentors and assessors to ensure that the hospital/community midwifery experience meets the required practical and educational standards.

Facilitate parenting education to women/birthing people during the antenatal /postnatal period.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered Midwife
2. Evidence of teaching and assessing experience
3. Evidence of ongoing further professional and personal development

Desirable criteria

4. Degree/Masters level study
5. Fetal monitoring masterclass attendance
6. Teaching qualification/Mentorship/N97

Experience

Essential criteria

7. Suitable Post-Registration experience within relevant speciality
8. Clinical experience in low and high risk intrapartum areas including cannulation, caring for women with epidurals, suturing
9. Competent in CTG interpretation

Desirable criteria

10. Human Factors training/attendance
11. Teaching Antenatal classes

Knowledge

Essential criteria

12. NMC The Code (2015)
13. Ensure care is provided based on evidence and in line with the protocols and guidelines of the unit
14. Ability to deputise in the absence of Senior Midwife
15. Able to support learners achieve department objectives
16. Knowledge of clinical governance

Desirable criteria

17. Knowledge of audit and research and standard setting

18. Organisational skills and the ability to work effectively within a management structure
19. Effective communicator and team player
20. Analytical skills
21. Work with the MDT as well as autonomously when required
