Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Haematology & Blood Transfusion

Haematology and Blood Transfusion Team at Walsall Manor are seeking a highly motivated team colleague with a positive attitude and patient focused mindset.

Applications are invited for a suitably qualified, experienced and HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to work in our Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department at Walsall Manor Hospital site, as part of the BCPS. Our forward looking and dynamic department employs modern equipment and automated processes to deliver a quality routine service to the Trust. Our analytical platforms are currently provided by Sysmex UK for FBC and Werfen ACL350s for coagulation. Blood transfusion use the Ortho Swift analysers.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with Specialist Portfolio or equivalent and have experience working in a clinical laboratory. Experience of working out of hours will be an advantage. HCPC registered candidates working towards their specialist portfolio will also be considered, but will be paid at band 5 until they have attained their specialist portfolio.

Consideration will also be given to applicants working toward their registration portfolio with suitable laboratory experience.

If successful you will work in our routine automated sections in both Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Once fully trained, there will be a requirement to take part in the 24 hour shift working rota over 7 days. This includes evening, weekend, bank holiday and overnight work.

Job responsibilities

Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to provide accurate, useful and timely laboratory information for detecting, diagnosing and monitoring disease states. They are also responsible for providing blood products that are safe and suitable for individual patients prescribed by authorised medical personnel.

Biomedical Scientists are expected to work their core contracted hours within the 24 hour working arrangements in accordance with Agenda for Change.

BMSs rotate between Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Rotation will vary depending upon service needs, individual areas of interest and ability.

BMS staff are required to maintain their competency in all areas of their duties. Aspects of individual involvement may alter as competencies evolve over time.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
* Documentary evidence of Health and Care Professions Council registration (or working towards).
* On-going evidence of satisfactory CPD participation
* Working towards Specialist portfolio for Haematology/Blood transfusion


Experience

* Experience working in a clinical laboratory
* Experience of audits, CAPAs and maintaining a QMS
* Experience of troubleshooting and corrective action
* Experience of working in Haematology
* Experience of working in Blood Transfusion laboratory
* Participation in shift or out of hours service
* Experience completing competency assessments, individual and training others


Skills

* Demonstrate specialist knowledge in haematology and blood transfusion
* Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory quality management processes and governance
* Have good verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to interpret and technically validate diagnostic laboratory results for clinical use.


Flexibility

* Participation in all laboratory shift rosters to cover 24 hour working in accordance with Agenda for Change with some lone working.
* Be prepared to work at another site with the BCPS network at short notice.
