We are seeking a commercially driven Head of Procurement to lead the team through our next stage of growth, as we continue to deliver our current 5 year business plan. The Head of Procurement is responsible for leading and developing the procurement function to deliver efficient, ethical, and commercially sound sourcing strategies across the business. This role will ensure continuity of supply, cost competitiveness, and supplier performance while aligning procurement practices with the company’s operational, financial, and growth objectives. It is anticipated that you will currently be working in a business that supplies materials to the construction industry, and have some understanding of timber based products.
Your team are based in our Head Office in Tilbury, Essex, so whilst we do not expect you to be based on site 5 days a week, you will need to be prepared to travel and spend time with the team on a regular basis.
Develop and execute the overall procurement strategy, aligning sourcing decisions with commercial goals, operational needs, and sustainability commitments.
Lead and manage supplier selection, onboarding, and contract negotiations.
Proactively manage the end-to-end supply base, identifying strategic partners, mitigating risk, and improving supplier performance.
Implement and monitor supplier KPIs and performance reviews, taking corrective actions where performance gaps are identified.
Work closely with Operations, Logistics, Sales, and Finance teams to forecast demand, plan inventory, and align procurement with commercial and operational planning cycles.
Oversee purchasing activities to maintain optimal stock levels across all depots, reducing overstock, excess, and obsolete inventory.
Regularly review and improve inventory control policies and replenishment processes.
Lead, develop, and mentor the procurement team to create a high-performing, accountable function that drives value across the organisation.
Identify and implement opportunities to streamline procurement processes, reduce costs, and improve supplier responsiveness.
Drive automation and digitalisation of procurement processes where appropriate.
Deliver regular reporting and actionable insights on key procurement metrics.
What are we looking for in a Head of Procurement?
Strong negotiation and supplier management skills, with a proven track record of driving commercial outcomes.
Strategic thinking with the ability to connect procurement decisions to broader business objectives.
Knowledge of timber products and market sectors.
Deep understanding of end-to-end procurement, category management, and inventory planning processes.
Familiarity with ERP systems, procurement tools, and advanced Excel/data analysis.
Experience in multi-site or distributed stock and supply chain environments.
