About the role
Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering is delivering one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the UK as part of the Geotechnical Sub-Alliance at Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station. This once-in-a-generation project is preparing the ground for the construction of a new nuclear power station through complex geotechnical works including diaphragm walling, piling, soil mixing and grouting. Using specialist equipment such as hydrofraises, hydraulic grabs and large piling rigs, our teams are helping to deliver the critical foundations that will support a major new energy asset for the UK.
As part of this collaborative alliance, we are looking for an experienced Senior Site Engineer to lead key work fronts and support the delivery of complex ground engineering operations on site.
As Senior Site Engineer, you will take responsibility for leading multiple work fronts across major geotechnical packages, ensuring works are delivered safely, to specification and in line with programme and commercial objectives. You will play a key role in coordinating engineers, supervisors and subcontractors across technically complex operations such as diaphragm walling and soil mixing.
Working closely with the Project Manager and wider project leadership team, you will help drive performance across safety, quality, programme and commercial delivery while ensuring compliance with NEC4 alliance contract requirements. The role will also involve mentoring engineers and supporting the development of the next generation of ground engineering professionals.
What you'll be doing
You will lead the day-to-day delivery of ground engineering works across multiple work fronts, ensuring all activities comply with project specifications, drawings and technical standards. This will involve coordinating labour, plant and subcontractor resources while resolving technical challenges quickly to maintain productivity and progress.
You will take ownership of site technical governance including ensuring ITPs, RAMS and permit requirements are followed while driving the close-out of non-conformances and maintaining strong quality assurance standards across the project.
Safety leadership will form a key part of the role. You will provide visible leadership on site, support investigations into incidents and near misses and identify trends to help prevent recurrence while promoting a strong safety culture across teams.
You will oversee site briefings across work fronts, ensuring high-quality communication of safety, technical and operational requirements. This will include delivering briefings to stakeholders and reviewing briefing records to ensure compliance with project standards.
The role will also involve defining workface procurement requirements, supporting hire versus buy decisions and managing subcontractor performance including variations where required.
From a quality perspective, you will take ownership of QA processes for key scopes such as diaphragm walling and soil mixing, ensuring inspection and test plans are robust, hold points are achieved and NCRs are closed out efficiently while maintaining strong reporting to the client and third parties.
You will actively drive productivity improvements by benchmarking production rates, analysing performance data and identifying constraints that may impact output across activities such as wall panel construction or soil mixing operations.
Programme management will include overseeing detailed sequencing of works, reviewing critical path activities and managing float within the programme. You will also support delay analysis and collaborate with the Project Manager to develop recovery strategies where required.
Commercial responsibilities will involve supporting early warnings, compensation events and cost/value reporting while contributing to earned value analysis and project forecasting.
You will ensure works are delivered in line with the NEC4 Alliance contract, supporting change management processes and ensuring programme updates and contractual obligations are clearly communicated across the team.
Who we're looking for
We’re looking for a strong site leader with experience delivering complex ground engineering or geotechnical works packages. Candidates will typically have around five to eight years’ experience leading work fronts or supervising engineers within major infrastructure or construction projects.
A degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering is expected, with professional accreditation such as IEng or CEng viewed favourably.
You will hold a CSCS card as a minimum requirement and ideally hold SMSTS certification. Additional qualifications such as incident investigation training, NEC4 accreditation or Authorised Person training would also be advantageous.
Technically, you should have strong experience across ground engineering disciplines such as diaphragm walling, soil mixing or grouting and be confident resolving technical challenges in a fast-moving construction environment.
You will also have a strong understanding of programme management and commercial processes, including critical path analysis, delay analysis and NEC4 contractual procedures.
Candidates should be comfortable using project and engineering software such as Primavera P6, MS Project, Excel, AutoCAD and CEMAR to support reporting, planning and commercial management.
Above all, we are looking for someone who is calm under pressure, decisive in their leadership and proactive in managing stakeholders while driving high standards across safety, quality and delivery.
