Rate of Pay : £31.10- £40.44 per hour Hour per Week: 18 Summary: The Trading Standards Officer (Technical) is a senior-level regulatory role responsible for ensuring criminal compliance and consumer protection across the Wirral. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, you will lead complex investigations into serious breaches of legislation, conduct high-risk inspections, and execute enforcement actions ranging from informal advice to formal court proceedings. Beyond casework, you will serve as a technical expert, mentoring junior staff and representing the Council in regional and national strategic partnerships to shape future policy and health promotion initiatives. Responsibilities: Lead complex criminal investigations and projects. Identify legal contraventions and execute appropriate enforcement actions (PACE interviews, seizures, and legal proceedings) based on assessed risk. Prepare comprehensive case files for the Council Solicitor, brief legal teams, and provide expert evidence in Court as a witness for the prosecution. Assist in interpreting new legislation and government guidance. Research and develop internal policies and procedures to ensure the service meets local and national statutory returns and performance targets. Act as the Lead Officer for specific technical areas (e.g., Food or Metrology). Ensure the security and continuity of the evidence chain and maintain specialized equipment. Supervise and train less experienced colleagues. Conduct consistency exercises to ensure law enforcement is uniform across the team. Qualifications: University Degree or equivalent. CTSI Trading Standards qualification (DTS/DCATS) including Food and Legal Metrology modules. Essentials: Substantial experience working within a Trading Standards service, specifically in a large urban authority or complex private sector environment. Proven track record of investigating consumer complaints and conducting high-level negotiations to change business behavior. Experience in mentoring staff and providing technical assurance on case files and inspections. Deep knowledge of current Trading Standards law, Enforcement Procedures, and PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act). Please note: You should be available to work immediately or at a short notice.
