Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent position ofConsultant Clinical ScientistAfCBand 8c.This is a full-time postwithin the Rare Disease and Reproductive Genomics Programme(RDRG).

Candidates must beHCPC registered, holdFRCPathand haverelevantextensiveexperience inthedelivery and development of genomic technologies in rare diseaseand/or prenatalclinicaldiagnostics, working with aconsiderabledegree ofprofessionalindependenceandexpertise.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to deputize for the HeadofProgrammeand other Consultantswhere necessary, takeresponsibility for leading clinical workflows and sub-teams relating to rare diseaseand prenatal genomics,and have cross-departmental roles as a pivotal member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

Extensive experience in service development is requiredalongside a collaborative and inclusive leadership style.The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and workcloselywithotherclinical colleagues through MDTs, professionalgroupsand NHSEdriven Genomic Medicineinitiatives .

The post will be based at WMGL within Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust. WMGL is closely aligned with the West Midlands Clinical Genetics Service. We also work collaboratively with the Central & South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA), the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS), the University of Birmingham, in particular, the Institute of Cancer and Genomics Sciences, and with other diagnostic and pharmaceutical industry partners.West MidlandsGenomics Laboratory (WMGL) is the lead laboratory within the Central and South Genomics Laboratory Hub (GLH), which provides genomic testing services across the West Midlands, Oxfordshire & Wessex.

Essential

* Science degree (first or second class Honours).
* Certificate of Competence in Genomics or Cancer Genomics (or equivalent)
* State Registration with HCPC.
* FRCPath Part 1
* FRCPath (Part 2) or actively preparing for FRCPath (Part 2)
* Active participation in CPD.
Knowledge

Essential

* Senior laboratory management
* At least 8 years post-training experience in clinical diagnostic Genetics.
* Experience and competence in writing and checking clinical diagnostic reports to the required standards.
* Experience of laboratory supervisory work
* Excellent specialist technical, analysis and interpretative skills.
* Expert knowledge of the principles of Genetics including up-to-date knowledge of diagnostic tests.
* Sound knowledge of Health and Safety issues.
* Excellent communication and management skills
* Excellent organisational and supervisory skills in particular ability to lead team of scientists and technicians.
* Ability to liaise with a wide range of professionals and public.
* Computer skills.
* Ability to deal with distressing situations.
* Reporting of test results with distressing implications to patients and their families.
