Job Summary

The Chief Nursing Officer is a key member of the Executive Team and Board, responsible for providing strategic professional leadership across nursing, allied health professions, quality and regulatory standards. The role collaborates with executive and operational colleagues to ensure services are safe, effective, responsive and continuously improving. The Chief Nursing Officer also acts as a visible professional leader across the organisation, championing inclusion, psychological safety, staff voice and compassionate care.


Key Responsibilities

* Strategic Leadership
o Contribute to the overall strategic leadership of the Trust
o Support development and delivery of organisational strategy
o Lead the nursing, AHP and quality agenda across the organisation
o Promote innovation, transformation and continuous improvement
* Professional Leadership
o Act as the executive professional lead for nursing and allied health professions
o Promote professional standards, accountability and development
o Ensure professional practice frameworks are embedded and maintained
o Support workforce development, leadership and succession planning
* Quality & Patient Safety
o Lead the Trust’s quality governance framework
o Ensure effective systems for patient safety and clinical assurance
o Provide Board assurance regarding quality and safety performance
o Lead learning from incidents, complaints and patient experience
o Ensure compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements
* Safeguarding & Patient Experience
o Provide executive leadership for safeguarding across the organisation
o Champion patient and carer involvement and co‑production
o Promote trauma‑informed and person‑centred approaches
o Ensure patient voice informs improvement and service delivery
* Workforce & Culture
o Promote compassionate and inclusive leadership
o Support staff wellbeing, engagement and psychological safety
o Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
o Support delivery of the HEART cultural framework
* Partnership Working
o Build effective relationships across the Integrated Care System
o Represent the Trust externally on nursing, quality and patient safety matters
o Work collaboratively with regulators, commissioners and partner organisations
* Governance & Accountability
o Ensure robust governance arrangements are in place
o Contribute to Board assurance and risk management processes
o Support delivery of operational and financial objectives
o Ensure effective use of resources and value for money


Qualifications

* Essential
o Registered Nurse (MR or LD) qualification
o Current NMC registration
o Significant senior nursing leadership experience
o Board‑level experience
* Desirable
o Masters Degree
o Leadership Qualification


Experience

* Essential
o Significant experience within mental health, learning disability, autism or community services
o Experience leading quality governance
o Experience of organisational transformation
o Experience of partnership working across systems
o Experience leading cultural improvement
o Experience working with regulators
* Desirable
o Masters Degree
o Leadership Qualification
