Job id: 141346
Salary: Competitive
Business unit: Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine
Department: Roger Williams Inst. of Liver Studies
Location: Guy's Campus
Category: Academic & Teaching

The Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies (RW‑ILS) in the School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences (SIMS) at King's College London is seeking to appoint an outstanding Professor (or Reader) in Hepatology to lead high‑quality research and contribute to School and Faculty priorities in advancing liver science and patient‑centred innovation. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to a pioneering partnership between the Foundation for Liver Research, King’s College London, and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, dedicated to transforming outcomes for people living with liver disease.

The post will be based in the Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies (RW‑ILS), which is one of four Departments in SIMS, in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine. The RW‑ILS integrates discovery science, translational research, clinical expertise, and strong public and patient involvement to ensure our work delivers real, measurable impact. Our research programmes span five strategic themes: Transplantation, Advanced Therapies & Regenerative Medicine; Steatotic Liver Diseases; Cirrhosis & the Gut–Liver Axis; Hepatobiliary Cancer; and Paediatric & Rare Liver Diseases. The postholder will lead an ambitious research agenda within one or more of these areas, developing and sustaining an externally funded programme that enhances the Institute’s contribution to and academic alignment with School, Faculty and King’s research ambitions.

The successful candidate will publish high‑quality peer‑reviewed research, build interdisciplinary collaborations across King’s and nationally and internationally. They will play a key role in research‑led education, contributing to teaching and programme development at all levels in alignment with School priorities. A commitment to nurturing talent is essential, including the supervision and mentoring of PhD students and early‑career researchers.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and demonstrate substantial expertise in hepatology or a closely related discipline. A track record of high‑quality publications, significant grant success, and experience in teaching and academic leadership are essential. Candidates should bring evidence of leading research projects, fostering collaboration, and sustaining a reputation for excellence. Experience of international research partnerships and integrating public and patient involvement into research will be advantageous.

Closing date: 23.59 BST on 27th April 2026
