Overview
West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is seeking a Chief Executive to lead delivery of the Mayor’s priorities and shape the future of the West Midlands region. The role requires bold leadership, strategic vision, and a commitment to public value. The Chief Executive will work with local authorities, businesses, universities, and communities to drive investment, innovation, and inclusive growth.
Responsibilities
* Deliver high-impact programmes across transport, housing, net zero, skills, and economic development.
* Oversee the expansion of the Metro network to areas such as Birmingham Eastside and Merry Hill, and lead the transition to public control of the bus network to restore reliability and affordability.
* Guide the development of WMCA’s corporate strategy, leveraging opportunities from the Devolution Bill to enhance governance and transparency.
* Lead a high-performing Executive Board and foster a collaborative, innovative culture; empower staff to deliver for citizens.
* Embed WMCA values: collaborative, driven, inclusive, and innovative; reflect regional diversity in the organisation’s culture.
About You / Qualifications
* Visionary leader with a passion for public service and a proven ability to turn strategy into delivery.
* Experience in executive leadership within large, multi-functional organisations with a delivery-focused track record.
* Political awareness and the ability to build relationships across party lines and with elected members.
Location
The role is based at Summer Lane. At least 4–5 days per week in the office.
