Discipline Lead – Back end and Data We are currently hiring for an exciting role within our engineering department in Wigan. As the Discipline Lead for Back End and Data Systems you will own and drive all back-end and data capabilities across the organization. As one of three overarching leaders responsible for engineering objectives, you will oversee the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and secure back-end system and data solutions. You and your team will support vertical business teams by enabling key journeys and ensuring operational excellence in engineering practices. What you’ll be doing: Take responsibility for the end-to-end engineering strategy and operational excellence for all back-end and data systems supporting the key journeys and disciplines. Leading the design, development, and implementation of back-end systems using .NET and data workflows utilizing Databricks. Collaborating with vertical teams to support key business journeys, ensuring their enterprise needs are met effectively. Be responsible for establishing and maintaining engineering standards, best practices, and quality metrics. Be responsible for driving continuous improvement initiatives across back-end and data teams. Ensure effective governance, security, and compliance within cloud environments (AWS and Azure). Building and optimizing data pipelines in AWS (e.g., S3, Glue, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch). Leading the development and optimization of data processing pipelines using Python and SQL, with a solid understanding of distributed processing patterns. Leading and mentoring engineering teams, fostering a culture of high performance, innovation, and operational excellence. Managing and developing direct reports, providing coaching, performance management, and career development. Collaborating to build strong relationships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating business needs into technical solutions. Challenging the status quo, think creatively, and promote innovative ways of working. Advocating and implementing modern engineering practices Responsible for learning new modern technologies and promoting their adoption within the team. Responsible for taking a leading role in key decision-making processes, driving change within the engineering team. Responsible for the design and development of RESTful APIs and microservices. Responsible for ensuring secure coding practices and application security measures. Collaborating and supporting back-end testing and automation strategies. What you’ll need: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field. Extensive back-end development experience, especially with .NET/C#. Proven leadership in managing large-scale data and back-end systems. Line management experience, including coaching, performance management, and team development. Strong stakeholder management skills, able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. Demonstrated ability to build and optimize pipelines in AWS (e.g., S3, Glue, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch). Experience in Python and SQL, with a good understanding of distributed processing patterns. Proven experience working in regulated industries, preferably iGaming, with a focus on data privacy and compliance. Knowledge and championing of modern engineering practices, including cloud-native tech, DevOps, CI/CD, containerisation, and agile methodologies. Experience with cloud platforms, especially AWS and Azure. Hands-on experience with Databricks is preferred or event and stream architectures. Experience with message queuing and event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka, AWS SNS/SQS, or similar). Previous experience working within iGaming environments, with an understanding of industry-specific compliance, data privacy, and operational needs. Experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure automation. Proven Track record of delivering high-quality solutions in enterprise or regulated environments. Desirable certifications, such as Databricks Data Engineering Professional.
