Senior Well Abandonment Engineer – Aberdeen (12‑month contract)
AGR is partnering with an Aberdeen‑based client to recruit a Senior Well Abandonment Engineer for an initial 12‑month contract. The role is based in the Aberdeen office with occasional offshore visits.
About the role
The engineer will lead the onshore platform well abandonment team, preparing the well abandonment basis of design, well programmes, examination and notification/consents, time and cost estimates, and more.
* Support the Superintendent and rig teams with technical and planning work to ensure safe, efficient, and cost‑effective rig operations.
* Plan and execute well operations in accordance with client objectives, policies, procedures, legislation, and good oilfield practice.
* Ensure well design and operations comply with legislation and good oilfield practice.
Key duties and responsibilities
Well and Abandonment Planning
* Design P&A activities and create well programmes in compliance with the client’s Management System, analysing offset data, evaluating design options, assessing risk, and preparing detailed design and programme documents.
* Prepare Examination and Notification/Consent applications, time and cost estimates, procure services, equipment and materials, and coordinate suppliers and service providers.
* Develop well P&A philosophies that comply with client standards, legislation, and OEUK guidelines.
* Maintain awareness of technology developments and integrate applicable advances into well design and operations.
Operations Support
* Coordinate onshore internal and external team members to plan contingencies, resolve problems, and execute rig operations safely, efficiently and cost‑effectively.
* Assist the Superintendent in creating and reviewing detailed work instructions, peer reviews, risk assessments, programme reviews, MoCs, operational deviations, AWOPs, etc.
* Make regular offshore rig visits to oversee vendor work activities and enhance company/vendor communications and relationships.
Commercial Support
* Provide technical support for procurement and tender evaluation processes, and continue support for commercial contract drafting.
* Proactively manage vendor contracts during well operations to ensure technical and commercial compliance.
End of Well Reporting
* Create reports for the client and legislative bodies, compiling operations information and performance analysis to produce an as‑installed record.
* Lead wash‑up meetings and close‑out non‑conformance reports.
* Maintain an effective interface and communication process between teams, other client teams, and external/3rd‑party representatives to ensure clear understanding of project objectives, encourage knowledge transfer, and close out actions promptly.
* Record lessons learned by analysing performance and comparing results against the plan to provide organisational learning.
Cost Control and Invoice Approval
* Monitor cost expenditure, approve invoices, assist cost tracking, and review estimated vs. actual cost expenditure daily.
QHSE
* Ensure compliance with the Management System and assist team members in doing so.
* Recommend Management System improvements and maintain effective controls for drilling engineering and operations.
Qualifications / Certification
* Degree in a technical/engineering discipline.
* Offshore Survival Training Certificate, UK Medical and MIST.
* Full certification by a recognised Well Control Authority for subsea activities, e.g. IWCF to Supervisor level.
Work Experience
* Extensive experience as a Senior Well/Abandonment Engineer supporting platform drilling, completion, intervention and abandonment operations.
* Experience analysing offset data, evaluating design options, assessing risk, and preparing P&A basis of design and programme documents.
* Experience preparing examination and notification/consent applications, time and cost estimates, procuring services, equipment and materials, and coordinating suppliers and service providers.
* Experience developing well P&A philosophies that comply with client standards, legislation, and OEUK guidelines.
* Experience in peer reviews, risk assessments, programme reviews, MoCs, operational deviations, AWOPs, etc.
* Experience analysing performance and comparing observed results against the plan for future operational learning.
* High level of technical expertise in drilling/completions engineering and operations, well services, and well abandonment, with proven ability to handle complex scenarios and develop creative solutions.
* High level of commercial and contractual awareness.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of technological developments and industry initiatives.
* Sound knowledge of well abandonment operations and the HSE regime governing such operations.
Preferred
* Good experience of offshore well site engineering.
* Experience working in an Operator environment and in mature assets.
