Specialist Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist

The role is based at the Workington Diagnostic Centre (CDC) and involves routine and urgent lung function testing, home sleep studies, and CPAP counselling for patients with OSA and OHS. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Cardio-Respiratory Department, responsible for high‑quality diagnostic testing and patient communication.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform and autonomously report routine and urgent lung function testing.
* Perform and score home sleep studies, manage initiation and follow‑up of CPAP therapy.
* Communicate complex information, including to patients with learning disabilities.
* Undertake competency assessment, staff training and act as a lead trainer for respiratory physiologists and allied health staff.
* Develop, maintain and implement departmental policies and procedures, ensuring equality impact assessment.
* Plan and review team workload, update patient records, and control supplies.
* Act as mentor or preceptor to less‑experienced staff.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc in Clinical Physiology (or equivalent).
* Further qualification or equivalent experience to postgraduate diploma or equivalent.
* Registered with ARTP.
* ILS or equivalent.
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience performing and reporting specialist lung function testing in various settings.
* Experience setting up and scoring 3-channel home sleep studies.
* Experience counselling patients on CPAP therapy.
* Experience interpreting polysomnography.
* Staff management and training.
* Experience delivering service change.
* Experience performing and interpreting Cardio Pulmonary Exercise testing (CPEX).
Skills and Aptitudes
* Ability to remain focused during sustained concentration periods.
* Communicating complex information, including to patients with learning disabilities.
* Experience with equipment requiring fine motor skills.
* Good organisational skills.
* Ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy.
* Follow, maintain and devise policies and procedures.
* Work independently and as part of a team.
