Overview
Working with qualified staff you will be supervised toward being multiskilled, responsible for a range of tasks such as:
Key Responsibilities
* Understand and apply Food & Drink (F&D) principles
* Carry out planned preventative maintenance checks and fault finding
* Repair breakdowns and interpret data to support continuous improvement
* Follow instructions from Lead Engineers and maintain H&S standards
* Comply with company policies, SOPs, quality control documentation and engineering representations
* Plan work and organise resources to complete tasks
* Identify hazards and apply control measures to mitigate risks
* Comply with food safety, health and safety, and environmental regulations
* Select, check, use and maintain maintenance tools, equipment and their calibration
* Follow standard operating procedures, quality procedures, and site isolation/lock‑out procedures
* Apply mechanical and fluid power maintenance practices: check levels, wear, lubricate, fit components and calibrate equipment
* Apply electrical and control maintenance practices: use testing equipment, conduct risk assessments, fault find, perform thermographic surveys and check protection settings
* Apply reliability engineering techniques to prevent or reduce failures: condition monitoring, oil sampling, thermography, vibration analysis, ultrasound
* Install and configure instrumentation, process control and electrical systems
* Assemble, position, fix equipment or components and complete commissioning checks
* Disconnect and remove equipment or components, implementing storage measures to prevent deterioration
* Read and interpret equipment performance data
* Fabricate, drill and join to produce basic parts, spares or components to tolerance specification
* Perform down‑hand (flat) TIG welding – butt and tee joints
* Apply mathematical techniques to solve engineering problems
* Create and amend engineering drawings and representations
* Use PLC data for fault finding and problem solving on industrial networks
* Apply continuous improvement techniques: collect data, analyze performance and devise suggestions for improvement
* Restore the work area on completion of activity
* Resolve or escalate issues as required
* Use information technology for documentation, communication and data management; comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations
* Record work activity: asset management records, work sheets, checklists, waste records and reporting requirements
* Communicate verbally and in writing with colleagues and stakeholders using engineering terminology
* Produce reports such as equipment performance reports and provide guidance or training to colleagues or stakeholders
Training Schedule
* First year – block release: 20 weeks at NWTC
* Second and Third year – 10 weeks at NWTC each year
* Fourth year – 2 weeks at NWTC
* Remaining time spent on‑site, trained and assessed at the workplace. At the end of the apprenticeship candidates will gain a Level 3 Diploma in Food & Drink Maintenance Engineering and a Level 3 Food and Drink Maintenance Engineer Apprenticeship certificate.
Required Qualifications
GCSE in English (grade C/5 or above) and Maths (grade C/5 or above). Share any other relevant qualifications and industry experience.

Compensation
£18,500 a year (subject to annual salary review). Training course: Food and Drink Maintenance Engineer (level 3).
Hours & Dates
Initially Monday to Friday. From the third year onwards there may be a requirement to work shifts. 40 hours per week. Start date: Monday 24 August 2026. Duration: 3 years 6 months.
