Staff Nurse – Pre-Assessment

The role
The Cherwell Hospital is currently looking to recruit an exceptional Pre-Assessment Nurse to provide specialist nursing expertise, facilitating evidence-based patient-cantered care and assessment for a defined caseload of pre-assessment patients.
1. To work both independently and collaboratively with a team of nurses and healthcare assistants, enabling them to co-ordinate patients throughout their pre-assessment pathway, with a high level of input into the management and care of patients prior to admission for specified procedures.
2. To act as a resource and to provide education for patients and health care personnel, and to direct the pre-assessment nursing team.
3. Carry out relevant forms of care without direct supervision, working effectively within the multi-disciplinary team
4. To support of all members of staff within the Outpatient department, including students of nursing/visiting healthcare professionals
5. Actively participate in the teaching and mentoring of students and junior staff
6. To suggest improvements in care provision, recognizing and challenging poor practice, raising concerns to the relevant agencies where appropriate.
7. Ensure that the nursing philosophy of care for Pre-operative assessment is reflected in practice.
8. To ensure provision of a high standard of nursing care to patients attending the Outpatient department working within agreed policies and procedures.
9. To act as a liaison link with the Multi-disciplinary team and contribute to work involved in the Anesthetic Meeting / Complex MDT meeting - for example - escalating complex patient and help plan their care
10. Collaborates and consults with the multi-professional health care team and the patient, communicating very sensitive, complex information.
11. Uses highly developed communication skills to provide guidance, advice and support to the patient / ward / physio / theatre staff regarding management of their proposed admission and its impact on patient’s/carer’s life.
12. Whilst communicating complex, sensitive, sometimes distressing information to patient, is able to identify and overcome barriers to patient understanding
13. Provides verbal and written information to patient, to enable them to give informed consent for treatment, using specialist knowledge.
14. Establishes partnerships with patients/carers and communicates with them, sometimes in highly distressing or emotional circumstances
15. Provides, receives, interprets and communicates complex information with a range of health care personnel
16. Act as patients advocate, ensuring that informed consent, privacy and dignity are maintained (NMC)
17. Carry out health promotion within job role utilising information leaflets and networking with other specialist healthcare staff around the Trust where necessary
18. Critically reflect on own performance through supervision/action learning
What you’ll bring with you
19. Current NMC registration
20. Minimum 6 months paid experience in a Pre-op assessment Nurse role in an NHS/Private Hospital in the past 3 years
21. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
22. Flexible and positive attitude
23. A warm, considerate and empathetic character
