Database Engineer – Contract – 6 months
Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom
Work Setup: Hybrid – 3 days in office
Client: Global financial services firm managing wealth and navigating complex markets.
What you'll do:
* Design, deploy, and manage large‑scale Snowflake and PostgreSQL database systems across hybrid and multi‑cloud environments (AWS, Azure) ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, and performance optimization.
* Collaborate with engineering and platform teams to ensure security, performance, and availability; promote best practices in schema design, query optimization, and data lifecycle management; mentor junior engineers and support cross‑training in database technologies.
* Implement reliable backup, disaster recovery, and compliance strategies.
* Build and maintain infrastructure‑as‑code and automation pipelines for database provisioning, scaling, and monitoring.
* Develop self‑healing and auto‑scaling mechanisms for dynamic workloads.
* Lead modernization initiatives, including cloud‑native databases, serverless architecture, and AI/ML integration, while evaluating emerging technologies to improve platform efficiency and developer experience.
What you bring:
* Expert in PostgreSQL and Snowflake administration, optimization, and performance tuning, including platform management, warehouse sizing, query tuning, cost control and Cortex AI services.
* Stays current with Snowflake SaaS offerings, integrations, and cloud data warehousing trends.
* Experienced in managing large‑scale distributed systems (100K+ clusters) with strong scripting, automation skills (Python, Terraform, Ansible), CI/CD, and infrastructure‑as‑code.
* Familiar with AWS and Azure cloud‑native services.
* Familiar with cloud architectures and data warehousing; experience with Snowflake design patterns and migration workflows is a plus.
* Experience with large‑scale IaaS platforms (Azure/AWS) is preferred.
* Prior experience deploying geo‑redundant databases using cluster managers like Patroni or GoldenGate.
* Implement and manage data security, access controls, and encryption, with knowledge of data governance and compliance practices.
