Who we are.
St Andrew’s Hospice is an independent registered charity providing compassionate care and support for adults, children, their families and their professional carers who are adjusting to life following the diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, throughout their illness, up to their death and into family bereavement support.
We have delivered palliative and end-of-life care for nearly 45 years to people across North East Lincolnshire and for nearly 25 years to children from Lincolnshire, Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
We receive only about a fifth of our funding from the NHS, which means we depend on the generosity of our community to fund much of the care we provide for local people.
Our hospice care services are delivered both in the community and in our buildings under one roof, providing high-quality, person-centred, holistic palliative care.
About the role.
Our Trustees work closely with our executive team to ensure we continue to provide outstanding care, maintain our excellent reputation and remain appropriately resourced to serve our communities in the future. Our Trustees provide strategic leadership and expertise from a range of backgrounds and industries, giving St Andrew’s the direction and insight to continue as a leader in palliative care.
Who we are looking for.
We are looking for a new Trustee with effective charity governance experience to join our skilled team of Trustees as we continue to deliver outstanding care.
As well as your governance experience, you will have skills and capabilities in at least one of the following:
* Finance
Time Commitment
Board meetings take place on the first Thursday of every month from 4-7 p.m. at our St Andrew’s Hospice, Peaks Lane, Grimsby. In addition, one or two away days per year may be held for strategic planning and board development. Meetings are to be attended in person, although virtual attendance can be arranged in exceptional circumstances.
There may be an opportunity to participate in a focused working group to progress strategic developments. These will be based on skill set and capacity to participate.
Board members are expected to maintain a reasonable level of contact with the hospice so that they understand the priorities and working environment and feel confident about the quality of its work.
Our Trustees are encouraged to visit our shops and undertake reviews on these. They also link up with SMT members within their area of speciality.
Remuneration
The role of Charity Trustee Director does not include financial remuneration, although travel expenses may be claimed.

Welcome from Rachel Harvey, Chair, and Michelle Rollinson, Chief Executive.
Thank you for your interest in joining our Board of Trustee Directors at St Andrew’s Hospice, located in Grimsby.
St Andrew’s Hospice is a highly respected local charity that provides palliative and end-of-life care for adults in North East Lincolnshire and for children and young adults in the wider areas of Lincolnshire, Hull and East Yorkshire.
The Hospice has deep roots in the community that it serves and has grown over 40 years from a volunteer organisation to a modern, fully integrated hospice care service. Its turnover is in excess of £5 million per annum, employing over 150 employees (135 FTE) and supported by over 500 volunteers working in all areas across the organisation.
After a major development costing £6.5 million, we are proud of our purpose-built hospice, which reflects our modern, forward-thinking approach to the services we deliver.
We are looking forward to working with people who have a strong passion and commitment to the Hospice and who wish to play an important part in the governance arrangements and the future strategy of St Andrew’s Hospice.
When we were founded and what we do now.
The inspiration and dedication of a small group of local people prompted support for a movement to provide a better way to respond to the needs of patients and families facing the reality of a terminal illness. Hence, St Andrew’s Hospice was registered as a charity in 1980 and became a company limited by guarantee in 1992. In 1980, it began to offer day services on a weekly basis on borrowed premises. It has grown over the years and now offers palliative and end-of-life care to any person of any age who requires our services, regardless of diagnosis, in purpose-built, contemporary premises.
Our Services
* 12 bedded Adult Hospice (Andrew’s)
* 4 bedded Children’s & Young person’s Hospice (Andy’s) – opened in 2001
* Health & Wellbeing Programme – Physiotherapy, Complementary Therapy, Creativity, Clinical Review, Family Support, Chaplaincy
* Integrated Locality-Wide Bereavement Services
* Paediatric Community Service
* Lymphoedema Service
We work in partnership with our local provider of adult health and social care services, Care Plus Group, and all community staff working in palliative and end-of-life care are hosted at the hospice. We are developing integrated services, looking at how best to utilise staff across both organisations to enhance patient care locally.
To continue providing care, we need to raise c.£5 million per annum, with £4 million of this from charitable sources, including our Trading Company. We operate 18 shops and a central donation/distribution sales facility, including a growing e-commerce function. Volunteers support all our services and are integral to the success of St Andrew’s Hospice.
