CDE operates across the entire Eastern region which stretches from the Scottish borders along the entire east coast of England and on to London, Kings Cross covering 6,042 miles of track which sees over 7,500 passenger journeys every day as well as 1,057,462 tonnes of freight moved each week. Brief Description An exciting opportunity to join the safety and sustainability leadership team in Capital Delivery Eastern. Our vision is to deliver industry leading projects in a safe and sustainable way. This role offers the opportunity to influence the sustainability performance in Network Rails biggest portfolio of enhancement and renewals projects. The role will work closely with our developments director, to establish sustainability excellence in the pipeline of enhancement projects coming through from development stage into design and delivery in Capital Delivery Eastern. The role will also work across Capital Delivery, developing our sustainability strategy and providing technical leadership to Sustainability specialists across our renewals and enhancements delivery areas. We have stretching targets in the space of Carbon, biodiversity and social value across Capital Delivery Eastern, and we need someone with passion to engage our teams and our supply chain to achieve them. We are looking for someone with excellent leadership and communication skills, who is able to collaborate well with others and willing to think creatively. About the role (External) Key Accountabilities: Deliver expert advice on sustainability into the Capital Delivery Safety and Sustainability strategy and improvement programme and facilitate the implementation through effective line management and contractor collaboration to improve sustainability performance. Develop and deliver expert subject matter input on sustainability to assurance activities so that Capital Delivery accountabilities can be effectively discharged. This is through review and agreement of audit and deep dive requirements and through the subject matter expert role on the functional audit plan Develop and deliver authoritative advice on sustainability into the development and management of risks for Capital Delivery in the active risk management system to improve sustainability performance. Provide a sustainability focus in the strategic development of controls and project requirements for different project commercial models to facilitate the right focus within contracts and therefore project delivery. Develop and lead a positive culture through effective engagement with contractors to build a collaborative environment for sustainability to improve performance. Direct and lead environment or social value incident Level 2 investigations to enable maximum learning to be acquired for continuous improvement in sustainability performance. Direct and lead the specification for sustainability competence and training requirements for project delivery staff within Capital Delivery to enable the right level of skills and competence. Direct and lead sustainability activities and maintain effective liaison with peers in the technical authority; the regional team, other Capital Delivery regions, programmes and major projects, and aligned routes to enable effective sharing and learning for continuous improvement in sustainability and alignment to national strategies and policies. Develop documentation and other media to maximise the effectiveness of sustainability activity, control and measurement, including creation, communication and appropriate cascade to key stakeholders. Provide specialist sustainability support to the developments team to input to business cases for new projects to demonstrate the commitment of sustainability by Network Rail to the DFT and to facilitate the inclusion of sustainability requirements and benefits from the beginning of enhancement projects. Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications Essential Criteria: Chartered member of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IEMA or similar) or working towards Chartership with expectation of achieving this within a time frame agreed on appointment Bachelors Degree with an emphasis on environment and/or sustainability management, or equivalent experience Demonstrable in-depth understanding of environmental or social legal requirements and experience in ensuring compliance acquired within a similar role Demonstrable experience in embedding a sustainability strategy Demonstrable experience of building sustainability into business cases and early project design Evincible experience of leading a team and/or function Demonstrable understanding of health and safety risks Demonstrate experience of actively building internal and external network to support delivery. Demonstrable experience of mentoring and addressing team and individual capability requirements. Verifiable experience of partnering across functions and boundaries. Demonstrable experience of translating business's goals into clear priorities and responsibilities. Significant experience of communicating with and supporting others to understand how their functions business goals and activities support the broader business strategy. Desirable Criteria Demonstrable experience of managing an ISO 14001 compliant environmental management system Demonstrable experience of handling employment and skills programmes in a construction or engineering environment Demonstrable knowledge of project management and/or understanding of the project management lifecycle within the railway industry, or a similar operating environment.
