Digital Designer / WordPress Developer - 02-11-2025
We don’t want good. We want extraordinary. We are seeking a talented and versatile Digital Designer / WordPress Developer to join our creative team. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable designing websites in Figma and building them as fully bespoke WordPress themes – with a strong emphasis on user‑centred design, pixel‑perfect front‑end execution, and WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility compliance. You will work closely with our designers and lead developer to produce elegant, performant, and accessible digital experiences – from concept and prototype through to final build and launch.
Key Skills & Responsibilities – Design
* Web & Interactive Design: Design full website layouts and digital experiences with a clear focus on UX, UI, and accessibility (WCAG 2.0 AA).
* Design Tools: Create detailed web designs using Figma, working within design grids and reusable component systems.
* Wireframes & Prototypes: Produce wireframes and interactive prototypes to communicate design intent and gather client feedback.
* Client Collaboration: Present design concepts in client meetings, explaining rationale and incorporating feedback clearly and professionally.
* Design Patterns: Apply and maintain design pattern libraries to ensure consistency and scalability across projects.
* Cross‑Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with developers to ensure feasibility and precision of implementation.
* Best‑Practice Advocacy: Promote accessibility, usability, and responsive design principles in all creative work.
Key Skills & Responsibilities – Development
* Custom Theme Development: Build fully bespoke WordPress themes – no page builders or off‑the‑shelf themes – using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and modular PHP templates.
* Front‑End Code: Write clean, semantic HTML5, maintainable SCSS/CSS, and lightweight JavaScript following best practices.
* Responsive Design: Ensure all websites are fully responsive, with fluid layouts and well‑considered breakpoints across devices.
* Accessibility: Implement WCAG 2.0 AA‑compliant markup and interactions to deliver inclusive user experiences.
* API Integration: (Desirable) Experience integrating REST API data into WordPress templates.
* Launch & QA: Manage technical elements of launch including SSL, 404 setup, cookie compliance, analytics, and pre‑flight error checking.
Requirements
* Experience: Minimum 6 years’ design and 4 years’ development experience, ideally within an agency environment.
* Portfolio: Proven ability to design and build complete, visually engaging, accessible websites from concept to completion.
* Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of WordPress, ACF, HTML5, SCSS/CSS and some knowledge in PHP and JavaScript.
* Design Proficiency: Ideally advanced skills in Figma, with experience managing design systems. Other design package skill will be considered (such as Adobe XD), but we would look for a willingness to learn Figma.
* Accessibility & Usability: Understanding of WCAG 2.0 AA and modern UX/UI principles.
* Communication: Confident in explaining creative and technical decisions to both clients and internal teams.
* Organisation: Able to balance multiple short‑term deliverables with medium‑term project deadlines, maintaining attention to detail under pressure.
* Curiosity: Keen to learn from colleagues, explore new tools and techniques, and continually improve output quality.
Additional Information: This role may involve occasional travel for project kick‑offs or client meetings. Day‑to‑day collaboration takes place via tools such as Basecamp, Trello, and Teams. We value craftsmanship, initiative, and curiosity – if you take pride in creating accessible, beautifully designed, and well‑built WordPress websites from the ground up, we’d love to hear from you.
