Job Description
You will join a community of over 500 researchers and support staff from various disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience, and engineering, focusing on marine biology and environment, to work on a project at the interface of geochemistry, palaeoclimate, and biomineralisation.
This position is funded through an ERC Advanced Grant (Microns2Reefs) to Professor Gavin Foster (University of Southampton). The project aims to understand tropical coral biomineralisation and skeletal geochemistry, utilizing advanced laser ablation techniques to analyze coral skeletons for climate reconstructions, focusing on sea surface temperature and ocean pH over the last 100-150 years.
Candidate Requirements
* Experience with single and/or multi-collector plasma mass spectrometer instruments, including sample preparation in clean laboratories.
* Experience applying geochemical tools to study past environmental, oceanographic, or climatic changes.
* Proficiency in image processing and data analysis.
* Skills in hypothesis testing, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing.
* Enthusiasm for research, innovation, and meeting deadlines both independently and as part of a team.
* Interest in applying cutting-edge geochemical techniques to Earth's recent climate history.
This is a fixed-term appointment until 31/07/2026. Candidates working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD are encouraged to apply. The title of Research Fellow will be awarded upon PhD completion; prior to that, the position will be titled Senior Research Assistant.
