An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Blood Sciences – Blood Transfusion department at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership, for a substantive Band 7 Advanced Biomedical Scientist.

The post holder must demonstrate specialist knowledge and will be responsible for the operational management of the blood bank laboratory, ensuring a quality, continuous, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic service. They will support the Blood Bank Manager to ensure provision of service to patients from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Primary Care Trust.

The Blood Sciences Department is initially separated into Automated Blood Sciences and Specialist Blood Sciences services. Automated Blood Sciences comprises the disciplines of Automated Clinical Chemistry, Routine Haematology, Routine Coagulation (NGH) & Blood Transfusion. Specialist Blood Sciences further encompasses the specialised disciplines including Cell Markers, Haemolysis, Immunology and Specialised Clinical Chemistry & Toxicology.


Main duties of the job

If you would like to join a friendly, progressive, innovative team and play a part in the transformation of pathology services across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw we would like to hear from you.

As an integral part of the Blood Sciences Senior Team, you will have a key role in operating the framework for quality management across sections of the laboratory.

This is to include quality and clinical governance, staff development and training, information management, strategic planning, supplies management, capital procurement and personnel. You will supervise Registered BMS, Trainee BMS and Biomedical Science Assistant grades and co-ordinate the organisation of a departmental section(s) on a day-to-day basis and provide information and progress reports e.g., staffing, workload, performance, and non-conformities, to the Scientific Lead BMS section leads and Blood Sciences Manager at regular intervals.

You will also be responsible for monitoring and reporting staff attendance and allocating annual leave.

Person specification


Education and Qualifications

* HCPC registered
* FIBMS or MSc (in Discipline or equivalent) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Blood Sciences) or level 7 Apprenticeship or equivalent extensive experience with a commitment to obtain a level 7 qualification.
* IBMS Specialist portfolio (Blood Sciences) or other BMS (Blood Sciences) specialist qualification
* Evidence of continual professional development
* Further Management training


Experience

* Extensive experience in a UKAS accredited clinical (Blood Sciences) Laboratory.
* Experience with a wide range of Blood Sciences Diagnostic techniques
* Experience in application and monitoring of UKAS standards
* Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities


Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to Lead a Team
* Effective Communication skills, written and oral
* Evidence of effective time management skills and with a methodical approach
* Ability to motivate oneself and other staff
* Ability to deliver new services


Personal Qualities

* Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory training and required laboratory competences
* Ability to plan, prioritise and allocate work and work under pressure
* Ability to work individually and as part of a team
* Prepared to work flexibly including participation in weekend and evening work and out of hours rota as required
* Commitment to Providing 8am-8pm service and weekend out-of hours work
