We highly value the contribution that the Specialist Practitioner (School Nursing) makes to improving outcomes for children, young people and their families, using evidence-based, early intervention strategies.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Specialist Practitioners (School Nursing) to join and complement our forward-thinking Dorset 0-19 CYP Public Health Teams. This role is in the Dorchester and West Dorset locality within the 0-19 CYP Public Health Team based in Dorchester. This post is a permanent part time post of 30 hours per week, year round with no weekend working, some hybrid working and flexibility with hours. You will be required to travel across both Dorchester and West Dorset areas and be present within teams and schools alike.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Practitioner, you will lead and participate in the School Nursing core programme, as underpinned by the Healthy Child Programme and the high impact areas and will work in partnership with children, young people and families, the Local Authority, Early Intervention Services, Children’s Services, Schools and other Health Care providers.

You will manage the members of the 0-19 team effectively, delegating within the skill mix team and sharing knowledge and skills across the 0-19 team. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist interventions and packages of care to people on an allocated caseload; promoting independence and autonomy; working within a multi-disciplinary team.
Advance own clinical knowledge, skill and competence based on current evidence through advanced educational programmes.

To communicate effectively in verbal and written form in the exchange of highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information in difficult situations using de-escalation, mediation, resolution and professional Duty of Candour.

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of. Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service are able to present a valid DBS certificate instead of requiring a new check.

Person specification


Knowledge skills and training

* Registered specialist community public health practitioner school nursing
* Membership of the relevant professional body
* Evidence of recent professional development in an up to date portfolio
* Depth of knowledge of role and area applied for


Job specific experience

* Recent previous experience within a specialist role
* Experience of managing change
* Able to prioritise workload effectively


Managerial / supervisory experience

* Experience of mentoring junior staff
* Experience of devising and delivering training


Information technology

* Experience of using electronic patient records
* Able to analyse data and produce reports using Microsoft Excel and Word
* Able to communicate effectively at different levels of the organisation with staff, patients and partner agencies, both verbally and in writing including the exchange of highly complex and sensitive information
* Experience of planning and organising complex activities to include organising not just own time but that of junior staff


Business travel and additional requirements

* Ability to travel using own vehicle on trust business
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English enabling post holder to carry out full range of duties and responsibilities of the role
