The apprenticeship in dental nursing is an 18‑month government funded course in partnership with City & Guilds, delivering a Level 3 Extended Diploma. Apprentices work within a full dental practice, supporting dentists and dental team members across all aspects of clinic workload.
Responsibilities
* Assist dentists during treatment, providing chair‑side support and handling instruments and materials.
* Perform infection control activities including the sterilisation and preparation of equipment, and the maintenance of a clean clinical environment.
* Take and record patient histories, conduct oral health assessments, chart treatments and record radiographs according to legal and best practice standards.
* Manage patient anxiety and support patients throughout their visit using appropriate communication and behaviour techniques.
* Book appointments, take payments and answer phone calls, ensuring smooth reception duties.
* Prepare clinical areas and materials for procedures, including the management of consumables and stock control.
* Identify and report any abnormal clinical findings, medical emergencies or patient safety concerns.
* Communicate effectively with patients, patients’ families and the wider dental team, including interpreters where required.
* Provide preventive advice and oral health education, supporting patients to maintain long‑term oral and general health.
* Participate in continuous professional development and contribute to the evidence‑based improvement of practice.
Qualifications and Skills
* Level 3 advanced apprenticeship in dental nursing accredited by City & Guilds.
* Functional Skills in English and Maths, Level 2 (unless exempt).
* Strong communication, organisational and team‑working skills.
* Attention to detail, patience and a customer‑care orientation.
* Willingness to learn and adapt to new dental technologies and protocols.
Training & Assessment
* Country‑wide blended learning: online study with weekly teaching sessions and local on‑the‑job training at a partnering dental practice.
* End‑Point Assessment (EPA) conducted after completion of an apprentice portfolio.
* Assessment of functional skills in English and/or maths if required.
Salary and Working Hours
£15,704 to £25,396.80 per annum (dependent on age). Full‑time apprenticeship schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday to Saturday, with a mix of full‑day and half‑day sessions.
