Job Overview
Step into a Senior Leadership Role in Acute Oncology – Make a Real Impact at FHFT. We offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced Acute Oncology Nurse to progress into a senior role within our well‑established Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. This pivotal position provides cross‑site clinical and managerial leadership, helping to shape and deliver a high‑quality, patient‑focused service.
Our dynamic AOS team reviews 900–1000 patients every month across both sites through our 7‑day, nurse‑led model. We provide rapid, expert assessment for patients with solid tumours who present as emergencies to ED, offering specialist advice for new cancer presentations, treatment‑related toxicities, and cancer‑related complications.
Responsibilities
* Independently assess and examine patients
* Formulate differential diagnoses
* Request and interpret investigations
* Develop and support effective management plans
* Work collaboratively with oncologists, ED clinicians, and acute medical teams across the Trust
Main Duties of the Job
* Support the AOS/CUP/NSS Lead nurse in providing clinical and managerial leadership across both Frimley and Wexham hospital sites.
* Have advanced clinical assessment skills, non‑medical prescribing and be working towards MSc in cancer or ACP care to provide advanced cancer nursing skills in AOS and CUP service.
* Provide support and line manage AOS Band 7 as well as Band 4 administrative teams.
* Deputise alongside your incumbent Band 8a colleagues for this very busy AOS service and support AOS quality indicators for oncological emergencies.
* Provide education and training for doctors, nurses, AHPs across the Frimley ICB including formal academic university accredited training programmes.
* Be a leader and role model for AOS CNS team and ensure patients presenting to FHFT feel compassionately cared for and provide key‑worker support for patients with primary brain cancer or Cancer of Unknown primary.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
* Degree in Nursing or equivalent
* MSc qualification or working towards
* Teaching or mentorship
* Advanced communications skills training
* Advanced physical assessment module
* Non‑medical prescribing module or working towards
Desirable Criteria
* Leadership/management qualification or willingness to undertake
* Experience in clinical/managerial role
* CUP skills/experience
* Experience/understanding of cancer related research
* Understanding CUP pathways
* Experience in QIP and service improvement
Skills & Competencies
* Audit and reporting experience
* Recent experience working in AOS acute cancer
* Education/training delivery of cancer content
* Awareness of national cancer agenda and guidelines
* IT literate with good understanding of common packages
* Patient cancer education/counselling skills
* Psychology Level 2 training
* Experienced in telephone consultation
* Able to work cross site
