2026 Graduate Programme – Rail Engineering Services
WSP invites recent graduates to join the Rail Engineering Services team across the UK & Ireland. The role is designed to develop future experts in rail project delivery, offering hands‑on experience on high‑profile projects such as HS2, East West Rail, Old Oak Common and more.
Team Locations
* Rail Civil Infrastructure – Leeds, London or Manchester
* Information Management – Birmingham, London or Manchester
* Project Management – Birmingham, London or Manchester
Key Responsibilities
* Apply engineering principles to railway systems, supporting new designs across track, signalling, electrification, telecoms and rolling stock integration.
* Assist senior engineers and project managers with research, technical documentation, and data analysis.
* Support seamless interaction between subsystems to ensure safe, efficient, and integrated operation.
* Capture, analyse, and trace client requirements, translating them to practical engineering solutions.
* Participate in hazard identification workshops, risk assessments, and safety case development.
* Liaise with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to align technical and project objectives.
* Prepare and review technical deliverables.
* Stay up to date with industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes affecting railway systems and consultancy practices.
Technical and Project Management Sub‑Roles
Rail Civil Infrastructure
* Design and deliver lineside and ancillary works across platforms, signal structures, OLE gantries, telecommunications supports, retaining walls, culverts, access points, walkways, level crossings, cable routes, and UTXs.
* Work across all design stages from concept to as‑built drawings and hand‑back.
Information Management
* Support project teams with BIM Digital Advisory and strategy.
* Coordinate and review BIM models for accuracy.
* Apply ISO19650 standards and common data environments (e.g., BIM360 Docs).
* Implement digital collaboration workflows and improve delivery efficiency.
* Produce engineering models and drawings, acting as a BIM coordinator and resolving design issues.
Project Management
* Manage budgets, forecasts, and cost control, ensuring financial discipline throughout the project lifecycle.
* Support project delivery to meet scope, schedule, cost, quality, and risk objectives.
* Develop and maintain the project plan (scope, schedule, cost, risk).
* Ensure alignment with client expectations and internal delivery frameworks.
Graduate Development Programme
The programme spans two years and focuses on personal and professional development. It includes core business and professional skills training, career development workshops, mentorship for professional registration, and on‑the‑job experience. Candidates will be encouraged to pursue chartered status with institutions such as the IET and IMechE.
Required Qualifications
* Minimum of a 2:1 in a master’s degree relevant to the applied discipline.
* Degree expectations for teams (examples):
* Rail Civil Infrastructure – MEng Civil Engineering.
* Information Management – MEng Mechanical or Civil Engineering, MEng/MSc in Computing, MSC in BIM for Smart Engineering.
* Project Management – Master’s in Engineering or a relevant business/management degree.
Desirable Attributes
