About the role
Reporting to the Area Distribution Manager, the Lead Distribution Manager will oversee the safe and legal operation of the fleet and distribution operations management team at both Princess Royal and Greenford Vehicle Operating Centres. The role involves ensuring continuous optimization and effective management of distribution operations and vehicle operating centres within a defined geographical area, complying with legal obligations to the Traffic Commissioner. You will lead managerial and frontline teams trained and motivated to ensure mail transportation between Plants, Network and Collection hubs, Delivery Offices, and external customers.
You will line manage 9 Transport Managers overseeing up to 250 HGV and agency drivers, with responsibilities including:
* Pipeline Performance & Continuous Improvement
* Deploy and embed World Class Mail across Distribution/Vehicle Operating Centres, including pillar lead activity.
* Review site performance using balanced scorecard/Key Performance Indicator metrics and develop plans to address performance gaps with your team, utilizing continuous improvement tools.
* Professionalize distribution through programme enablers, ensuring operational work plans are achieved and mail flow is optimized, compliant with policies and procedures. Lead change initiatives.
* Asset Management
* Ensure compliance with all fleet/truck legislative requirements, holding an O’Licence for the site and a Certificate of Professional Competence.
* Build effective relationships with Fleet Business partners to optimize fleet utilization.
* Coordinate with Asset managers to ensure efficient container flow plans.
* Ensure compliance with distribution management systems like pre-advice and Open Options.
* Managing Individual and Team Performance
* Apply business standards, policies, and agreements effectively. Coach Traffic Office Managers where applicable.
* Create a positive IR/ER climate with employee involvement in performance improvement.
* Implement performance management activities, including 121 meetings and Personal Development Plans.
* Develop training plans to support national and local training needs, utilizing Advance Driver Coaches.
* Achieve site Employee Survey targets.
* Planning/Customer
* Maintain professional relationships with external partners/customers and internal stakeholders critical to site performance.
* Implement and achieve business plans.
* Coordinate plans for special events and delivery.
* Manage effective agency relationships.
About You
To excel in this role, you should possess and demonstrate the following skills and experience:
* Knowledge of safety requirements and accident investigation.
* Industry experience in logistics operations or related fields, with a proven track record of leading teams and delivering results.
* Knowledge of UK road transport legislation; must be Certificate of Professional Competence qualified and willing to study to attain within 6 months.
* Understanding of Network Planning tools, Royal Mail policies, and processes.
* Strategic planning, project management, and data/budget analysis skills.
* Strong stakeholder relationship-building and influencing skills.
* Negotiation skills with union representatives at local and divisional levels.
* Experience with World Class Mail and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
