Overview
Consultant in Plastic Surgery with major interest in Microvascular Breast Reconstructive surgery. This is a substantive full-time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department.
The Plastic Surgery Breast Reconstructive department is a regional service covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol to provide specialist Breast Cancer and Reconstructive surgical expertise. The post-holder will join the current team and will have regular elective theatre and outpatient capacity, be part of the Oncoplastic Breast MDT, and participate in the Plastic Surgery Service and On-Call rota.
Responsibilities
Main duties of the job include the range of work in the Plastic Surgery Department, with a focus on congenital and acquired conditions such as skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service and laser therapy. The post holder will participate in combined clinics with other specialists and have access to dedicated theatres and 24-hour general emergency theatre capacity. The postholder will be part of the on-call emergency plastic surgery service and will contribute to delivery of the regional Breast Reconstruction service.
There will be opportunities to work within a multidisciplinary team (including head and neck surgery, Ortho-Plastics, oncologists and dermatology) and to engage in dedicated clinics including hands, pigmented lesions, sarcoma and breast reconstruction.
Working arrangements
There are dedicated plastics and burns operating theatres and three local anaesthetic theatres, with 24-hour access to general emergency theatres. The postholders will receive secretarial support and office accommodation shared with other consultants.
The successful candidate will join a larger team of consultants providing plastic surgery and burns services to the region. The department has access to ITU/HDU beds and dedicated emergency plastic surgery beds.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non-UK applicants)
* Maintain Full GMC registration
* Must have CCT in Plastic Surgery and be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of appointment
Experience
* Recent experience with UK hospital systems or equivalent
* Minimum of 10 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training; three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post or equivalent
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions
* Specialist knowledge and training in microsurgical breast reconstruction
* Experience in surgical management of common, non-specialised conditions in children, including trauma
Desirable criteria
* Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship or Breast Microsurgery Fellowship (UK or overseas) or demonstrable equivalent experience
* Higher academic qualification (MD or MS)
Knowledge
* Recent CME/Training progression
* Experience in audit projects and written up
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
* Knowledge of political context within which we operate

There is an on-call commitment to emergency services; candidates must demonstrate high clinical experience and competence in general plastic surgery. The department includes 24 senior consultants and regional coverage for the North Bristol NHS Trust as a Major Trauma Centre.
