Job description
Reporting to the Senior Financial Accounting Manager and coaching staff, you will be a critical member of the financial accounting team supporting reporting, audit, advice, financial control and month end close.You will be expected to perform analysis and interpret data to provide assurance to senior managers over the validity of the data. You will gather supporting information and query data in line with accounting standards and suggest solutions to decision makers. You will ensure data is clear and supportive and can be used as evidence for audit purposes
Key Responsibilities
* Supportmonth-endprocesses including review of journals and oversight of balance sheet account reconciliations
* Perform analysis, interpret data and support preparation offinancial reportsand forecasts including those externally published (Annual Report & Accounts, supply estimates, transparency reporting) or submitted across government
* Facilitate external and internal financialauditand contribute to resolving issues raised
* Contribute to the provision of financeadviceand guidance (e.g. in relation to non-current assets, travel and expenses, VAT or government finance policies).
* Assist in developing and embedding a robust financial control environment, documentingStandard Operating Procedureswith appropriate controls (e.g. segregation of duties) and sufficientcompliance monitoringin place
* Provide task direction and to junior team members, prioritising tasks as required to meet deadlines and reviewing the work of the team.Develop guide and coach team members.
* Proactively identify opportunities and implement changes to promote continuous improvement across our systems and processes including the chart of accounts
* Work flexibly and collaboratively across finance to support the team during peak times and to meet collective priorities.
* Build effective relationships across the finance, risk and procurement team as well as with national audit office.
Key outputs and deliverables
* Reviewing and analysing the monthly balance sheet reconciliations, identifying and challenging transactions where necessary and supporting the month end process
* Ensuring the integrity of data collected for external reporting purposes and that good controls and checks are in place to maintain accuracy
* Reviewing, analysing, interpreting and consolidating financial data for use in the annual report and accounts and estimates processes, providing insight for senior managers and decision makers
* Completing the NAO disclosure checklist challenging where necessary, supporting the audit process including audit evidence and responses and escalating potential issues to senior managers or decision makers
* Interpreting financial data against relevant accounting standards and being able to explain it in a non-technical format

Role Criteria
Essential
* Holds or actively working towards CCAB (or equivalent) accountancy qualification with experience relevant to the role profile (Lead)
* Experience in analysing reconciliations and journals – sound understanding of double entry
* Preparation of financial statements /statutory returns
* Experience of providing professional finance advice to stakeholders
* Experience of coaching and reviewing others’ work.
Desirable
* Knowledge of IFRS and/or FREM reporting requirements
* Knowledge of HMRC’s VAT Contracted Out Services headings.
* Experience of dealing with external auditors
