Job Summary

The Trust currently provides Ophthalmology outpatient services at Oldham Integrated Care Centre, Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield General Hospital. All day case surgical activity takes place at Rochdale Infirmary. This post requires cross-site working, providing outpatient clinics from different sites and surgical work mainly at Rochdale Infirmary.

The advertised posts will complement a team of 10 Consultants, 4 Associate specialists, 2 speciality doctors and 9 Resident Doctors.

This appointment will be for 10 PAs made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Contract Terms and Conditions.

We are looking for candidates on the Specialist Register/Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST or CCT in Ophthalmology) or willing to complete CESR within 12 months of employment.


Main Duties

Leadership and development of ophthalmic subspecialty work. The post holder will have a broad knowledge of Ophthalmology, including sub-specialty experience and knowledge of Glaucoma in order to complement existing services.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

* FRCOphth or evidence of equivalent training and experience

Qualifications (Desirable)

* Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
* Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners

Professional Registration (Essential)

* Registration on the GMC Specialist Register – CCT or within 6 months of obtaining CCT
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST or CCT in Ophthalmology or within six months of entitlement) or willingness to complete CESR within twelve months of employment

Knowledge, Training & Experience (Essential)

* Extensive experience in Ophthalmology particularly management of Glaucoma
* Broad experience in the management of all aspects of Ophthalmology
* Good understanding of Clinical Governance
* Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change
* Evidence of participation in research

Knowledge, Training & Experience (Desirable)

* Research Skills: Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments
* Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)

Teamwork (Essential)

* Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams
* Positive attitude towards members of the wider healthcare team
* Evidence of good organizational and leadership skills
* Evidence of development and management of change
* Ability to manage risk and end‑of‑life decisions
* An understanding of management in the context of the Health Service

* Attendance at management course

Communication (Essential)

* Empathetic and sensitive to patients' needs
* Able to explain things clearly – particularly complex or sensitive information

* All applicants must have demonstrable written and spoken English skills adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, demonstrated by either undergraduate medical training in English, IELTS scores of Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6, or an OET certificate with at least a grade B in each area
* Applicants may provide alternative evidence if they believe they meet communication standards
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present reports at board level

Teaching (Essential)

* Experience of teaching juniors, medical students and other health care professionals
* Proven teaching abilities

Teaching (Desirable)

* Attendance at teaching course
