Clinical Nursing Associate / Assistant Practitioner - Neonatal
Main duties of the job
Southampton Neonatal Services is seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals to work across our Transitional Care Unit and the new 'Woodland Ward' Special Care Baby Unit. The role involves delivering family‑centred care to babies and their families.
* Working in the Transitional Care Unit alongside the midwife.
* Assisting in the purpose‑built, nurse‑led Woodland Ward (opened October 2024) with 16 cots, including 4 family integrated care rooms.
* Providing a welcoming, caring and safe environment where parents can stay 24 hours a day.
* Encouraging unrestricted access and family‑integrated care, guiding parents in a supportive environment.
* Working shifts including nights.
Job responsibilities
You will be an NMC registered Nursing Associate or an Assistant Practitioner with a health‑related foundation degree, working under the supervision of a registered midwife/nurse. Responsibilities include:
* Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating care for babies and their families in line with family‑integrated care ethos.
* Supporting effective communication with parents during admission, participation in ward rounds, and delivering parent‑craft, education and practical support with empathy, kindness and understanding.
* Collaborating with nurses, allied health professionals, infant feeding team and speech and language team to support feeding progression and promote breastfeeding while respecting other feeding choices.
* Facilitating safe and timely discharge and transition to community services.
* Administering medications and performing acute clinical skills such as venesection/cannulation as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications, knowledge and experience
* Nursing Associate on the NMC register.
* OR Assistant Practitioner with a health‑related foundation degree (e.g., Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care).
* Passionate about caring for families and their babies.
* Evidence of numeracy and literacy – minimum national qualification level 2.
* Experience working under appropriate supervision as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Experience providing and receiving complex, sensitive information.Knowledge of nursing procedures and practices in an acute hospital setting.
* Assessed as competent to administer medications.
* Experience working with newborn babies/children.
* Extended clinical skills (e.g., venesection/cannulation).
