The Bookkeeper / Accounting Assistant is responsible for preparing and maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, managing day-to-day bookkeeping operations, and supporting financial reporting and decision-making. The role includes liaison with external accountants and auditors.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Financial Operations
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records (general ledger, journals, and sub-ledgers)
* Process accounts payable and receivable, including invoicing, credit control, and supplier payments
* Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts
* Prepare and post month-end and year-end journals
* Manage payroll processing and related filings (where applicable)
Reporting & Compliance
* Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts and financial reports
* Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies
* Prepare VAT returns and other statutory submissions
* Assist with audits and provide required documentation
* Support budgeting and forecasting processes
Systems & Controls
* Maintain and improve bookkeeping systems and internal controls
* Ensure data integrity within accounting software
* Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
* Strong knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles
* Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)
* Advanced Excel or spreadsheet skills
* Solid understanding of tax and compliance requirements

Qualifications & Experience
* Professional certification (e.g., AAT, ICB, CPA, ACCA – part-qualified
* Minimum 2 years bookkeeping or accounting experience
Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 to 5:00 and its office based– no hybrid
Salary: £24,000 - £26,000 depending on age and experience. Fully qualified AAT level 4 up to £28,000
