Treating Tobacco Dependency Clinical Nurse Specialist

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our team as Clinical Nurse Specialist for our Tobacco Dependency Service across NBT and UHBW. We are a small team working across NBT and UHBW in inpatients and maternity. The post holder will support the inpatient service while working closely with the team to ensure consistency across all sites. You will work closely with other health care staff and public health staff within the system to develop the programme. The post‑holder will manage staff absences, appraisals, ensure staff attend study days, be a professional role model for others, and challenge poor practice with the correct support and guidance. You will be expected to maintain a high standard of evidence‑based care for patients through development of evidence‑based guidelines, keep up to date with professional practice developments and share them with staff. The post‑holder will facilitate training and ensure continuous professional development of colleagues working with patients who smoke tobacco – this will include doctors, pharmacists, nurses and healthcare assistants.


Main duties of the job

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will support the TTD inpatient service as part of the wider BNSSG Treating Tobacco Dependency programme.


Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Within the programme, the role holder will:
o Support the management of the service on a day‑to‑day basis
o Line manage TTD advisors at the BRI and Weston – this will involve travel across sites
o Work in collaboration with the TTD team at NBT including the TTD lead and TTD pharmacist
o Develop guidelines and policies to support the service
o Identify and promote best practice by actively prescribing NRT to patients who smoke and delivering training to support teams prescribing NRT across the trust
o Provide routine reporting and communications material for various boards and wider system plans
o Ensure IT data systems are developed that capture and report on patients smoking and delivery of stop‑smoking interventions
o Ensure availability of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and other pharmacotherapy is available and offered to all patients who smoke
o Working with the TTD lead to develop and deliver training programmes for frontline staff – focussing on their role within tobacco dependence treatment intervention, including Very Brief Advice (VBA) training and teaching about Nicotine Replacement Therapy
o Support inpatient teams and TTD advisors to ensure patients who smoke get appropriate support by removing barriers to accessing medication and care

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria:

* Current NMC registration
* Degree in Adult Nursing

Desirable criteria:

* Smoking cessation advisor – intermediate level qualification (or willingness to undertake)


Work Experience

Essential criteria:

* 3 Years experience as a Band 5 Staff Nurse
* Ability to work independently
* Experience of working with multi‑disciplinary teams
* Experience of providing help, support and/or counselling on either a one‑to‑one basis or as part of a group setting.

Desirable criteria:

* Experience of providing smoking cessation support.
* Experience of developing and delivering successful health promotion interventions.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria:

* A good level of understanding of evidence‑based practice in relation to smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and benefits to quitting.
* An understanding of human behaviour in relation to making healthy lifestyle changes and decisions.
* Assertive and confident in their approach to managing at this level.
* Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a changing environment.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to communicate in challenging situations.
* A good standard of computer skills to include use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook Email.
* Accurate and sufficient record keeping.

Desirable criteria:

* Smoking cessation NCSCT trained.
* A basic understanding of audit and evaluation.

* Innovative and imaginative.
* Ability to quickly build rapport and trust and disseminate advice and support in a non‑judgemental manner.
* Ability to deal with difficult/sensitive situations.
* Able to work within a diverse community of patients and health care professionals.
* Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the programme and service.

Desirable criteria:

* Enthusiastic and committed to the Smokefree agenda and is dedicated to ensuring every person who smokes receives tobacco dependency treatment.
