Offer description

Overview

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We seek diversity and provide training and support for new joiners as part of a comprehensive induction.

The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and a sound working knowledge of running major investigations. Experience of working with Partnership Organisations and of leading and developing investigative teams and complex investigations is desirable.

Role and responsibilities

You will work with our Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes. Your knowledge and experience will help drive these cases by coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the investigations, from identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, through to casefile preparation and prosecution.

Investigations can be complex and varied, often involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud. This role provides an exciting opportunity for someone with relevant investigative experience to work in serious environmental crime.

This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed team of investigators working to bring the most serious environmental offenders to justice. You will help lead, coordinate and progress investigations and contribute to developing the team. See the Additional Information Pack for details.

Experience/skills required

You should have a high level of attention to detail, be hardworking and self-motivated with a strong investigative background. In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams) are required. Knowledge of environmental crime, leading serious criminal investigations, and the workings of a Major Incident Room is desirable. A track record of initiative, problem solving and team development is beneficial. Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 vetting processes is required within the 6-month probationary period. A full driving licence is required.

Role-specific requirements

This is a hybrid role with flexible work from home and office. Frequent travel for meetings and operational duties is expected. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, including having an incident role and availability to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be provided. Contact elspeth.allum@environment-agency.gov.uk for more information.

Licensing

Full Driving Licence required.

Additional information

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome flexible working patterns, including job share. Please indicate any preferred working arrangements in your application. We have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support applicants with disabilities, guaranteeing an interview to those whose applications meet the minimum criteria for the post. We do not engage with the market directly via post, email or phone for recruitment; see official guidance for supplier opportunities on Crown Commercial Service.
