NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The GP Out of Hours service is delivered across several sites across Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC). These posts will be based at locations across NHS GGC. The Healthcare Support Worker role will involves working evening, overnights, weekends and public holidays. Weekend day shifts and Public Holidays are also available at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

We are looking to recruit a further 3 experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Support Workers with proven acute care experience.

The post holder may at times be expected to work autonomously and as part of a wider team and be actively involved in the daily running of the GP OOH services. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the post holder will carry out specific care duties for high quality patient care to paediatric and adult patients referred for urgent assessment delegated by a registered nurse or other relevant medical professional.

The role of the Healthcare Support Worker is to support the registered nurses or medical professional in the provision of basic nursing care, assist with managing patient flow, record vital signs, recognise and appropriately escalate the care of deteriorating patients to clinical colleagues.

The role:

The Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) is part of the multidisciplinary team delivering care to patients in the Out of hours (OOH) period.

1. To actively participate in the delivery of patient and family care as an unregistered nurse in the multi-professional team within the GP OOHs period.
2. Work under the supervision of the registered nurse or registered medical practitioner, implement the prescribed plan of care to ensure delivery of a high level of care for people, their families and carers, in their own home or homely setting.
3. As part of a multi professional team, carry out personal care duties with people, in support of the registered nurse and other relevant professionals
4. Contribute and support the maintenance of stock levels and equipment

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

3x Permanent posts with various part-time hours:

1x 17.5 hours

1x 23 hours

1x 34.5 hours

The shift pattern is 6/11.5 hours day or night shift.

Please note that salary is Pro Rata for part-time posts.

Key responsibilities:

Patient care and clinical duties

5. Demonstrates care and compassion to patients, carers and relatives to help ensure high quality person centred patient care is delivered at all times.
6. To carry out a range of assigned patient care tasks as directed by a registered professional to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care.
7. To report observed changes in the patients physical/psychological needs to the registered professional.
8. Performs a range of tests and report results to registered professional, e.g. urinalysis, blood pressure, pregnancy testing, patient observations and similar activities.
9. Performs a range of patient care tasks e.g. wound observation and dressings, removal of peripheral cannula, stoma bag changing and reports any issues to the registered professional.
10. To deal with questions and enquiries from patients, carers and relatives e.g. on the clients condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise. Where appropriate, refer these to a registered professional.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

Qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

11. Significant healthcare experience,
12. experience of working in acute, emergency or urgent care
13. excellent communication skills with patients and staff
14. basic IT skills
15. willingness to complete BLS training
16. willingness to work 12 hour night shifts, weekends and public holidays

Desirable

17. SVQ level 3 or SCQF level 6
18. Experience working with both adults and children
19. Experience with clinical observations
20. Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct.
21. Completion and maintenance of statutory & mandatory learning activities.
22. Awareness, understanding and compliance of policies and practices e.g. Escort Policy, Prevention and control of infection and Health and Safety. This post holder is therefore able to work within the scope of their practice under direct and indirect supervision by the registered nurse (training will be provided)
23. Can demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department to support the registered nurse and ensure that they are compatible and in good working order. Will escalate any concerns to a registered nurse.
