The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving prep school as our Director of Sport. Sport at Wellesley is particularly strong, with the major sports being rugby, hockey, football, netball and cricket. The school also excels in cross country, athletics, swimming and tennis. The children have the opportunity to play golf and padel as well as taking part in triathlons, gymnastics, judo and dance.

The Director of Sport is responsible for the provision and development of sport throughout the school (Pre-Prep – Year 8). You must be able to promote excellence in coaching, sportsmanship, inclusivity, and breadth of opportunity for all pupils. You will be responsible for managing and allocating staff teaching Games, managing resources and a Games budget, and scheduling, coordinating and the administration of both matches and sports tours. This is a full‑time teaching role which includes leading the Games programme, with the addition of teaching PE.

The Director of Sport must demonstrate first‑class communication and interpersonal skills with colleagues, parents and pupils verbally and through email and social media channels. You must have outstanding organisational skills coupled with the ability and desire to work closely with other school departments and liaise closely with senior school sports departments.

Devising and delivering a Games Programme of the highest quality for all children in the School, regardless of their innate sporting ability, will be a central aim of the Director of Sport.


Main Responsibilities


Sports Provision

* Development and delivery of an outstanding co‑educational sporting provision throughout the School from Pre‑Prep to Year 8.
* The Games programme will include the provision of Football, Rugby, Netball, Cricket, Hockey, along with a wide range of other sports such as Athletics, Tennis and Swimming.
* Co‑ordination of a considered and balanced fixture list for Games, including house matches, festivals & tournaments.
* Management and allocation of staff teaching Games.
* Development of schemes of work for Games (including the creation and ongoing revision of a departmental development plan), to include provision for all pupils including those pupils linked to G&T and SEND, likewise keeping a watchful eye on those pupils who may have “sporting overload.”
* Management of resources and budget for the teaching of Games.
* Regular and effective communication with parents by email, weekly newsletter contributions, in liaison with the school office.
* Scheduling, coordinating and the administration of sports tours and excursions.
* Responsibility for Health & Safety and writing risk assessments for Games, and related sports tours. This includes being an active member of the School Health & Safety Committee.
* Ensuring compliance with all relevant sporting, health and safety, and safeguarding regulations/rules/laws.
* Keeping up to date with changes in sporting regulations/rules/laws and guidance in relation to prep school sport and ensuring that this is practised at all times within the department.
* Overseeing a programme of preparation for children applying for senior school sports scholarships.
* Liaising closely with senior school sports departments.
* Fulfil a full teaching role in Games, and teach PE and/or a classroom‑based subject.
* In conjunction with the Bursar, ensure that external games providers have undertaken all the relevant checks to start work at Wellesley Prep.


Fixtures

* Organise the fixture list each term and update the school calendar. This should be done in conjunction with the Director of Logistics, Director of Studies and Head’s PA. NOTE: any changes to the agreed fixture list/times etc will also need updating on the Website/SOCS calendar.
* Have an overview of all fixtures, with the aim of ensuring an even distribution of fixtures across age groups and ability levels, and taking a lead in the staffing of fixtures.
* Work with the school office to plan coaches or minibuses for all fixtures, considering the staffing and their driving abilities. Allocate staff drivers to minibuses where necessary. Liaising with the office regarding minibus bookings for the wider school.
* Liaise with the school kitchen, to provide an overview of the term with numbers for each home game.
* Liaising with the Head Groundsman regarding fixtures and pitches.
* Confirm fixtures each week with opposition DoS. Liaising with opposition to ensure that the quality of the fixtures is of the appropriate standard.
* Clear allocation of pitches for match days, to be communicated to staff, children and parents.
* Communicate fixture details to all teaching staff and peripatetic staff – i.e. which/when the children are leaving lessons, etc.
* Ensure that accurate information is published to parents and children on the team sheets via SOCS.
* Ensure the changing rooms and match tea are appropriately staffed.
* Work with the school matron to ensure there is medical provision/staffing for all home games and ensure that staff have medical kits for away fixtures.
* Ensure that staff have registered teams prior to leaving for fixtures and that any changes in the fixtures and participating children are known to the Office.


Equipment

* Monitoring of all school equipment, including a regular review of resources, their allocation and organisation, and their continuing suitability and maintenance.
* Ensure that there is sufficient equipment for all Games sessions to run smoothly.
* Purchase of equipment to provide a broad range of coaching strategies to be used.
* Organise the equipment for the start of teach term, so that balls, match balls, team kits, etc. are ready for use and remain so during the term.
* Organise “refereeing & coaching” kit for staff (after consultation with the Bursar) and ensure that there is uniformity of children’s dress for fixtures, both home and away.
* Liaise with the Headmaster regarding alterations or updates to the pupils’ sports kit.


Staff Development

* Attend staff meetings;
* Participate in the School’s Continual Professional Development arrangements;
* Keep abreast of curriculum developments and current changes in the appropriate subject areas;
* Attend inset and staff training at the start of each term


Assessments and Reports

* Liaise closely with the Director of Studies during the coordination and formatting of report information; tracking pupil activity and staff responsibility for report writing.
* Coordinate the writing of team reports for the school magazine.
* Observe, assess and record each child's progress
* Monitor strengths and weaknesses, and recognise the level at which the pupil is achieving
* Set targets for progress
* Prepare and present informative reports to parents
* Participate in parents’ evenings


Education and Qualifications


Working at Wellesley

* Immediately responsible to: Director of Studies
* Hours of work: 8am – 5pm Monday - Friday
* School Term time only (to include working days prior to the return and after the departure of pupils as may be necessary for the proper performance of your duties).
* Salary: Depending on experience.
