Clinical fellow in paediatric nephrology

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated trainee paediatrician (ST4 or above) with an interest in Nephrology to join Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as a Nephrology Fellow for Leeds Childrens Hospital (LCH).

The doctor in training would gain experience in in all areas of the Paediatric Nephrology Speciality Curriculum including management of Acute Kidney Injury (peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis & continuous Ven venous haemodialysis/filtration) and chronic kidney disease (pre-dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis & transplantation ~ 12 paediatric transplants/yr). General paediatric renal services include the investigation and management of children with: Nephrotic/ Nephritic syndrome; urinary tract infection and congenital anomalies of the urinary tract; renovascular disease / hypertension; renal tubular & metabolic disorders & renal stone disease. The doctor in training would also be able to participate in the transition service to adult care and attend outreach clinics covering 10 hospitals in Yorkshire. There are: weekly Clinical Grand Rounds plus weekly psychosocial and radiology meetings with monthly transplant listing, guidelines, governance & business meetings and histopathology meetings every 2 months. There are 4 outpatient clinics/week covering renal transplantation, chronic renal failure, general and specialist nephrology. There are monthly nephrology clinics and specialist joint clinics including rheumatology, neurology.

Delivering on call commitment in general paediatrics

There is an active teaching programme with a weekly ward-based teaching sessions, monthly evidence-based teaching sessions and a weekly postgraduate paediatric meeting. As a centre we also provide opportunities to train to perform renal biopsies.

Leeds Childrens Hospital has an annual budget of £103 million, inpatient bed base of 286 beds, and delivers 102,000 outpatient appointments and 20,000 inpatient and day case episodes. The majority of this activity is on the Leeds General Infirmary site, however there is a Neonatal unit based on the St James Hospital site.

As well as general paediatric medicine, LCH provides subspeciality care (oncology, hepatology and cardiology among others), neonatology and general/specialist paediatric surgery.
