Main duties of the job

To provide clinical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care to the residents.

To develop their own specialist interests and, if appropriate, align these with Trust and local service development plans.

Teaching and training of specialist nurses, other nurses, and prison staff where appropriate.

To contribute to maintaining and developing Health and Justice services within the Trust through clinical audit and other activities related to Care Quality.

Job responsibilities

We seek an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist/Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist to join our Health & Justice Services at HMP Bronzefield, the largest female prison in Europe. This role offers an opportunity to lead and develop mental health care in a complex but supportive environment, making a real difference in women's lives in custody.

* Forensic experience is not essential: applications from psychiatrists with general adult, community, liaison, or forensic backgrounds are welcome, especially those eager to bring their skills into a secure environment.
* A strong commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI): ensuring trauma-informed, gender-responsive, and culturally competent care.
* Significant opportunities for research and innovation: in quality improvement, digital transformation, or AI in healthcare, with time allocated for these pursuits.

Qualifications


Essential

* Relevant professional qualification or evidence of ongoing professional development
* Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of eligibility
* Approved clinician status or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
* Approved under S12 or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
* MRCPsych


Desirable

* Management and leadership qualification
* Higher degree (MSc, LLM, MD, or PhD)
* CCT in forensic psychiatry or relevant forensic qualification


Previous Experience


Essential

* Clinical leadership and management experience
* Track record of improving service quality


Desirable

* Experience with job planning
* Conflict resolution and complex performance management experience


Clinical Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

* Excellent clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social approach and broad medical knowledge
* Strong specialty knowledge
* Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written

* Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA

* Wide range of specialist/sub-specialist NHS or equivalent experience
