Overview
London Gatwick is seeking an experienced Design Manager with a proven track record in delivering design for large-scale construction and infrastructure projects. If you have a proven track record of managing teams and delivering design for projects above £150m, this is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic team and make a significant impact.
The airport's current projects, which range from £50m to £350m, include the International Departure Lounge (IDL) in the North and South Terminals, valued at over £500m, as well as a £140m extension to Pier 6.
As a Design Manager (Major Projects) at London Gatwick, you'll be instrumental in leading the design of strategically important, major building projects, typically exceeding £150 million in value. You'll have the opportunity to work on the full project lifecycle, ensuring designs meet project requirements and deliver best value.
You'll work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders up to board level and external design consultants, ensuring everything runs smoothly, keeping the project on track, and within budget.
Responsibilities
* Reporting into the Programme Design Manager, own end-to-end design from project start to completion, including oversight of smaller projects as required.
* Develop project scopes that support the business to meet its needs.
* Find innovative design solutions that meet project scopes, are realistically deliverable, meet GAL engineering standards, and are cost-effective.
* Develop clear and transparent design briefs for external design consultants.
* Manage and review outputs of external design consultants to ensure designs meet quality requirements and align with delivery milestones and governance tollgates.
* Work with the Asset Information Team and other stakeholders to determine asset information requirements for design and construction contracts.
Qualifications
* Strong multi-disciplinary experience in engineering design or design management, ideally in live operational environments.
* Proven ability to deliver safety-critical outcomes on major infrastructure or commercial projects, preferably multi-year programmes exceeding £150 million.
* In-depth knowledge of design principles, construction techniques, regulations, and constructability challenges.
* Experience leading and coordinating multi-disciplinary project teams.
* Skilled in managing complex projects from inception to completion, collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
* Demonstrable problem-solving, innovative thinking, and adaptability in dynamic environments.
* Educated to degree level or equivalent in architecture, engineering, or a construction-related field.
