Job description

Job responsibilities

This replacement post in haemato‑oncology will attract 10 PAs with on‑call remuneration. The job plan will be developed around specialist interests and the needs of the service, clinical and laboratory. The team of consultants will work together to deliver the Haemato‑oncology needs of the Acute Trust. The new appointee will take part in a 1:7 on‑call rota to cover the inpatient service at MMUH as non‑resident. Staff ward cover for haemato‑oncology patients includes one IMT, and two FY1 resident doctors on the medical rotations, and the permanent full‑time Haematology specialty doctor. The appointee will be based at new MMUH site when on ward cover (2 weeks in rotation with other consultants) whereas clinics are held at the sites of Sandwell and City Health Campus.

The Haematology day unit is situated at Sandwell health campus and is managed by senior chemotherapy nurse and trained ACPS. We have a team of 4 specialist nurses who assist in managing haemato‑oncology clinics and ward and provide a holistic service to haemato‑oncology patients. In addition we have two rotational specialty registrars and an IMT resident doctor working for SCAT service, however cross‑cover is available when needed. The SCAT centre is located at MMUH, separate to main ward and is manned by specialist SCAT nurses and separate SCAT medical staff.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Health Education West Midlands. The Haematology Department is actively involved in major national and commercial clinical trials and a research interest would be strongly supported for a suitably qualified applicant. We have at least two dedicated research nurses, a support assistant and two data coordinators who help in recruitment and data collection. We are also seeking a clinical research fellow to help in the recruitment and also support our research staff in already established research clinics. In addition the department works closely with regional specialist MDT at University Hospital Birmingham for stem cell and CAR‑T cell service. The laboratory network is now fully digitalised and linked to Black Country pathology service and specialist Haematology services are linked to MYRO services at university of Birmingham.
