Overview
Highways Operative – 5 months contract – £12.85 per hour. To ensure the efficient and effective undertaking of civil engineering activity including highways, bridges, street lighting and countryside works as assigned.
Responsibilities
* To undertake the duties of a Highways Operative with the necessary skills to undertake the maintenance and construction of roads, bridges, drainage, highways electrical and associated works and to ensure a personal high quality of workmanship at all times.
* The erection and removal of appropriate temporary traffic and pedestrian safety signs, barriers and any other associated equipment.
* Participation in gully cleansing activities including operating the gully tanker (where appropriately licenced).
* Undertake routine duties in highway or building environments as required, including manual activities and winter maintenance where applicable.
* Operate and maintain a range of hand and powered tools and equipment; operate specialist plant and machinery as required; undertake maintenance on public rights of way.
* Attend to emergency response (Emergence Action Team) on a voluntary basis, including gully cleansing activities, flood and storm response as the business needs dictate and may include out of hours activity.
* Participate in shift work as dictated by the business needs on a voluntary basis and may transfer to other services if required.
* Drive on-site and off-site (if appropriately licensed) and carry out routine checks on vehicles, plant and equipment in line with policy.
* Ensure personal safety and safety of others on site; follow Health & Safety training and Personal Risk Assessment guidance; wear appropriate PPE at all times.
* Utilise IT devices to submit documentation and collate information in systems as required (e.g., timesheets, vehicle defect books, tachograph cards, procurement logs, fuel cards).
Requirements / Qualifications
* Experience of manual activities in a highway or building environment.
* Experience in winter maintenance activities.
* Experience of bridge construction.
* Experience of hard landscaping.
* Supervisory experience.
* Health and Safety Certificates.
* Category CE Full UK Driving licence.
* First Aid Certificate.
* New Roads and Streetworks Act (Operative / Supervisor).
* NVQ 2 or equivalent (Highways related).
* To set out for work and undertake skilled operational activities in a highways related discipline.
* Knowledge of specialist plant and equipment; IT skills.
* To use a range of hand and powered tools, equipment, small and heavy powered plant and machinery; ability to operate complex powered plant with specialist skills.
