An opportunity has arisen within the North West Major Bridges Team for a Senior Engineer to work in our Inverness office. The role will involve helping to supervise a small team of Engineers and Technicians working on the investigation, design, procurement and construction management of bridge maintenance works on our stock of major bridge structures.

The major bridges include a wide variety of iconic and historic bridges including the cable stayed Kessock Bridge in Inverness, Connel Bridge, Ballachullish Bridge, the Cromarty and Dornoch Firth Viaducts and Skye Bridge which links the mainland to the Isle of Skye. They also include four moveable swing bridges where the trunk road crosses the Caledonian Canal.

Candidates should have experience of highway structure design and maintenance as well as statutory processes for managing health and safety, environmental and commercial aspects of schemes. Candidates should be professionally qualified to IEng or CEng level.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are interested in progressing their careers by helping manage the delivery of a diverse programme of work. The successful candidates will have good leadership and communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.

Job Purpose:

1. The Senior Bridges Engineer will manage the identification, investigation, design, planning, procurement and construction management of planned bridge maintenance works on the major bridges. The postholder will manage internal and sub-contractors’ resources to meet contract requirements.

Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not restricted to):

2. Assist a Principal Engineer with the management and supervision of a small design team, sub-consultants and sub-contractors.
3. Oversee the outline and detailed design of bridge maintenance schemes including technical approval and design certification.
4. Ensure compliance with technical standards or mange the submission of Departures from Standard when applicable.
5. Produce tender documents and preconstruction information packages.
6. Tender evaluation and assisting with contract award.
7. Manage the internal financial performance of individual schemes.
8. Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company’s Integrated management systems.
9. Ensure compliance with the CDM Regulations, as required, and ensure that robust risk assessments are carried out before works, operations or inspections take place.
10. Liaise with clients and auditors.
11. Co-ordinate the production, issue and archiving of all drawings, documents, and scheme files.
12. Ensuring that adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented prior to work commencing.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

13. Educated to degree level in Civil or Structural Engineering
14. Relevant experience in the design and maintenance of highway bridge structures.
15. Professional qualifications and membership of an appropriate professional body (IEng / CEng and MICE, MIStructE, IHE etc)
16. A full approved UK driving licence.
17. Skilled in the project management of schemes and the management of teams.
18. Clear communicator.
