Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking a dynamic, dedicated Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in gynaecological oncology to join the expanding Women’s Health team at Newham University Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking, patient-centred service within one of the UK’s most diverse communities.

The provisional interview date for this position is January 6th, but it is subject to change

Main duties of the job

About the Role:


You will be expected to provide high-quality care in both general obstetrics and gynaecology, with a clear focus on the management of patients with gynaecological malignancies. The post includes active involvement in the North East London Cancer Network, working closely with specialist teams across Barts Health and our regional partners.

The role will include:

1. Specialist gynaecology oncology clinics
2. Theatre sessions including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
3. Multidisciplinary team meetings and pathway leadership
4. General obstetric and gynaecology on-call duties
5. Teaching and supervision of trainees and medical students
6. Opportunities for research and service development

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

In response to increasing demand on maternity capacity and one of the highest birth rates in the UK at over 5500/year, the Trust has developed an integrated Women’s & Family Health Unit on site, which provides modern and effective facilities for Maternity, Neonatal Care, Fetal Medicine, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, Emergency Gynaecology Assessment Unit, Specialized and General Gynaecology and Adolescents. The service reconfiguration enables more streamlined pathways of care to be implemented, as well as provides more attractive facilities for patients and their families through the consumer engagement. Maternity wards include new Maternity Assessment Unit, Fetal Medicine Unit, antenatal ward, postnatal ward and central delivery suite.

During the daytime the consultant provides dedicated Central Delivery Suite (labour ward) cover from 08.00 to 16.00 with the second consultant covering antenatal and postnatal wards and gynaecology ward including emergency gynaecology. There is consultant presence on site till 22.00 hours for all seven days of the week. The group of consultants work on a ‘hot day’ basis, with all other regular commitments cancelled.

2.Facilities

There are comprehensive diagnostics including MRI/CT and PACS with digital imaging. A new IT system has been installed which will provide an advanced Patient Administration System, electronic patient records and interfaces with pathology. Essential and advanced laboratory facilities are available both at Newham University hospital and Royal London Hospital.

3.Teaching and Training

The Newham University Hospital undertakes a substantial volume of clinical teaching for medical students in fourth and fifth years from the Queen Mary University London Medical School. Students are taken in Anaesthetics, Medicine, Surgery, Paediatric, Infectious diseases, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopedic Surgery, ENT surgery, Mental health, in groups and independently. The high quality of training is acknowledged by the University in their annual reviews.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

7. ATSM in Obstetrics and Labour Ward Management
8. Experience in Colposcopy
9. CCST/CCT (or equivalent), or within 6 months of a date, or entry on the Specialist Register of the GMC for Obstetrics & Gynaecology
10. ATSM or Equivalent in Oncology. Wide experience in Obstetrics

Desirable criteria

11. Postgraduate qualification eg MD/Phd
12. Management qualification
13. Teaching qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

14. Record of Teaching at under- and post- graduate levels.
15. Evidence of multidisciplinary teaching

Desirable criteria

16. Record of attendance at training for trainer courses.
17. Record of self-development as trainer i.e. APLS/ATLS etc.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

18. An understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to Obstetrics as well as good understanding of PSIRF framework.
19. Record of Completed audit projects

Desirable criteria

20. NHS complaint handling
21. Risk management Training
22. Critical incident reporting

Skills

Essential criteria

23. Commitment to continuing personal development
24. Good verbal and written communication skills
