Job Summary
FM Assistant (Cleaning) – Saffron Walden Community Hospital, Band 2 (£12.92 per hour, £25,272 pro‑rate per annum). 13 hours per week: Thursday 15:00‑18:00, Saturday 08:00‑13:00, Sunday 08:00‑13:00. Unsocial Hours Pay: Saturday – 41% bonus, Sunday – 83% bonus. Salary and benefits are pro‑rate to hours worked. Work is permanent and part‑time.
Responsibilities
* Domestic Service (Rapid Response)
o Vacuum, sweep, scrub and mop floors; high and low dusting; wipe and polish surfaces, mirrors and chairs.
o Clean toilets, sinks, baths, showers; wipe down and clean kitchen appliances (cookers, ovens, fridges, microwaves).
o Defrost fridges regularly; restock consumables (toilet tissue, handtowels, soap).
o Descale taps and replace bin liners; handle bin liners that are not soiled with body fluids.
o Use colour‑coded mops, cloths and buckets; store or dispose of materials safely after each shift.
o Report faulty equipment, floor coverings or potential hazards to supervisor.
o Ensure correct disposal of general, recyclable and clinical waste.
* Food Services (where applicable)
o Assist with regeneration of cooked meals, recording temperatures and starting cook cycles.
o Prepare soup, gravy and custard for patient meal service.
o Use and launder oven gloves and cloths regularly.
o Serve and clear meals; wash and store crockery and cutlery.
* Laundry Service (specific areas)
o Launder patients’ clothing, duvet covers, duvets and curtains; ensure items meet required standards.
o Label personal items; segregate clean and soiled items to prevent cross‑infection.
o Maintain laundry cleanliness; complete cleaning checklist.
o Report faulty washing machines or tumble dryers to supervisor.
* Portering
o Deliver pharmacy boxes, medical records, linen, bread, milk, general stores, meal trolleys and collect dirty linen.
o Sort, deliver and collect mail, including Frank post.
o Assist with ad‑hoc tasks such as transporting patients, moving furniture, setting up meeting rooms.
o Monitor and maintain medical gas supplies; decant and deliver liquid nitrogen as required.
o Operate electro‑hydraulic waste compactor safely; assist with vehicle loading/unloading.
o Support site maintenance – keep car park and waste areas clean, assist with fire brigade access.
o Participate in gritting and snow clearance during severe weather.
Requirements
* Understanding of cleanliness and good hygiene practices.
* Similar previous experience in a comparable role.
* Right to work in the UK. Sponsorship is not available.
* COVID‑19 vaccination or exemption, as required by current regulations.
* Discovery and Barring Service check required; subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
