Join the Made to Order (MTO) custom implants unit within DePuy Synthes’ supply chain operations as a Design Engineer. You will lead the design and end-to-end case management of patient-specific implants and instruments which are manufactured on site here in Leeds.
We provide a service for patients who have specific clinical needs that cannot be met by a standard joint reconstruction product. This could be due to a variety of reasons including anatomical factors, or material allergies. We ensure that every patient has a joint reconstruction solution to help relieve pain and keep people moving.
Roles and responsibilities
* Lead design and case management for patient-specific implants and instruments, working directly with Surgeons and sales teams to understand patient needs.
* Produce CAD assemblies, manufacturing drawings, Routes and Bills of Material (BOMs).
* Ensure designs are safe through collaborating with R&D, and manufacturable by collaborating closely with production staff.
* Coordinate with planning, purchasing and commercial teams to resolve material delivery and WIP issues with sub-contract vendors.
* Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
* Author and maintain technical documentation in line with relevant device regulations.
* Ensure compliance with the quality system across manufacture and supply of patient-specific medical device products.
* Support project management tasks and continuous improvement initiatives.
How to succeed
* Degree in an engineering or scientific discipline (e.g., Medical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Product Design).
* Proven experience as a design engineer; experience in medical devices or closely related industries preferred.
* Strong CAD experience: Siemens NX experience is beneficial, as is CT Segmentation experience.
* Practical understanding of implant materials and CNC manufacturing processes.
* Experience preparing manufacturing drawings, good understanding of GD&T.
* Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong organisational, prioritisation and multi-tasking ability.
* Quality- and compliance-focused with practical problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work independently and as a constructive team member.
* Experience with Technical Files and device regulatory documentation.
* Familiarity with workshop operations and packaging/shipping requirements for medical devices.
* Exposure to ERP systems and production planning coordination.

This role offers a very competitive hourly rate. This contract will run initially for 12 months. Flexible working one day per week from home (role is otherwise on-site). Modern campus workplace with free Gym, subsidised canteen and costa coffee on site.
