Cambridge
Carter Jonas LLP
Posted: 12 September
Offer description

Overview

We are hiring an ambitious student for a placement year to join our rural department in Cambridge on a 12-month fixed term contract in the Summer/Autumn 2026. Our dedicated team of rural surveyors provide advice to landowners and farmers on unlocking the value of their assets, diversification, change of use, rural management, leveraging natural capital and bio-diversity opportunities, along with valuing rural assets all over the UK.

The Eastern Rural department is involved in management, professional and agency work. We manage land for private and institutional clients, our professional team undertakes valuations and advice to farmers and landowners and our agency team undertakes sales and purchases of farms and land. Cambridge is also the national centre, developing our thinking on National Capital and its value to landowners. As a placement student you will work all areas of expertise alongside senior agents on a day-to-day basis including client contact and will have your own areas of responsibility and opportunities to take forward work. Embarking on a placement year offers the potential opportunity for the right candidate to return as a graduate and begin your pathway to becoming a qualified surveyor.

Responsibilities

* Day to day assistance on various managed rural estates in stunning locations including direct contact with owners, tenants and contractors.
* Assisting agents with valuations, sales and a wide range of professional matters for both private and institutional clients.
* Site visits and property inspections

What will it take to be successful?

We are looking for forward thinking students with a can-do attitude, who have the ability to manage multiple projects and deal with a variety of work. You will ideally be studying a RICS accredited degree, however, we welcome applications from those studying a non-accredited degree who are looking to pursue a career in rural surveying. It is essential that you have or are working towards gaining a full UK driving license.

We offer you

We offer a supportive team environment and the opportunity to develop your knowledge of all aspects of our rural business in our offices. You will be provided with regular one to ones and feedback on your development and input into the team. With clear objectives you will truly be able to add value to our team while enjoying real exposure to our expertise, across a multitude of services that we offer our clients within rural, commercial, planning and development and infrastructures. You will gain transferable skills and knowledge in order to develop and open up future opportunities.

Carter Jonas runs an internal APC training program, available to all placement students and graduates. As part of this program placement students will take part in various away days focused on understanding the APC process and how to succeed. They will receive help and support from across the wider firm, including those who have recently sat their APC, as well as feedback and workshops provided by APC Assessors working at Carter Jonas. Overall APC contribution is only applicable for those with a RICS accredited degree.

Application process

You will be asked to respond to a number of questions about your work experience as well as your motivations and interest in a career in property/rural as well as any extracurricular activities. We ask you to provide reference contact details, one educational and one employment. If successful, you will be invited to attend an interview in November.

Rewards and commitment

We offer a highly competitive rewards package including group pension, flexible benefits, referral schemes and generous annual leave.

As an equal opportunity employer, we are dedicated to driving diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Learning and development is important to us; we encourage everyone to continue developing to optimise their performance and fulfil their potential.
