Overview
Sole Gardener – 3/4 days – Vacancy
A Sole Gardener vacancy for a medium sized country estate with a recently renovated Medieval Hall house, close to Sissinghurst in Kent, with existing parkland features, lake, with a garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith in 2020.
Garden and design
The garden includes a wide range of horticultural elements which are presented to a high standard including formal lawns and significant herbaceous borders. A woodland dell, parkland, small cutting garden, greenhouse and meadow provide a wider setting within the estate. The garden was designed by Tom Stuart-Smith to provide a beautiful contemporary setting which supports and respects the historic character of the renovated house and outbuildings. The framework of enclosed spaces, topiary and yew hedges creates a more formal enclosed territory immediately adjacent to part of the house which contrasts with other parts of the garden that have a much more direct relationship with the landscape.
Responsibilities and expectations
The design and extensive planting requires a high standard of garden maintenance and presentation. This is a hands-on, sole gardener position working 3 or 4 days per week (to be agreed), with additional support currently provided by a WRAGS trainee and contractors. We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, reliable, self-motivated and passionate person. You should be really interested in horticulture but also have experience of using/maintaining garden machinery as required.

Candidates should be experienced, ideally qualified to RHS Level 2 or 3, or equivalent experience.
