Trainee Children and Young People's Systemic Family Practitioner (SFP)

In an exciting development, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) are seeking to recruit a Trainee Systemic Family Practitioner. The post holder will be supported to deliver evidence-based psychological treatment to children and young people and their families in one of our established Children and Young People Mental Health Services (CYPMHS) in Sunderland, South Tyneside or Gateshead.

Successful applicant will gain experience providing psychological therapies for children and young people using NICE-recommended and evidence-based mental health treatments. As a trainee, they will also be expected to attend and complete the Post Graduate Diploma in Systemic Family Practice training programme at Northumbria University (Newcastle) and gain the skills and knowledge to enable them to deliver systemic interventions. The training course with the University commences in January 2026, therefore it is essential that the trainee will be available for employment from January 2026.


Main duties of the job

* Complete the Post Graduate Diploma in Evidence-Based Psychological Therapy (Systemic Family Practice) at Northumbria University within 12 months.
* Provide psychological therapies using NICE guidelines and evidence-based treatments and support the mental health needs of children, young people and their families.
* Engage vulnerable and underserved populations and support community-based care.
* Deliver training where appropriate as part of your role.
* Work with children and young people and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, using interpreters when necessary.
* Meet service targets and achieve clinical outcomes.


Training eligibility

To be eligible for training: must not have accessed a CYP-PT funded training programme within the last 2 years of qualifying and must hold a professional qualification in teaching, nursing, social work, AHP, counselling or a psychological therapy.


Qualifications and Experience

* Professional qualification in teaching, nursing, social work, AHP, counselling or a psychological therapy.
* Experience working in a children and young people's mental health service.
* Experience delivering assessments and treatments for children, young people and their families.
* Experience working in a community or education setting.
* Knowledge and experience of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
* Evidence of achieving service targets that demonstrate clinical outcomes.


Physical Skills

* Hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
* Manage own time and diary and the demands of both training and work in service.
* Be able to sit, stand and walk across the full duration of the working day.
* Move and handle objects in line with Trust guidelines using appropriate aids.
* Work flexibly, including unsocial hours as required.


Skills and Knowledge

* Working knowledge of universal and specialist children’s mental health service provision.
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and associated IT packages.
* Proven organisational and time/caseload management skills.
* High standard written and oral communication; write clear reports and letters.
* Ability to engage vulnerable and underserved populations.
* Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to work flexibly in a variety of environments.
* Make good use of the supervisory process for personal and clinical development.
* Carry out risk assessments within scope of practice.
* Understanding of evidence-based psychological therapies and child development links.
