Overview
JN Bentley is currently looking for a Primary Electrical Design Engineer for its battery energy storage system (BESS) team. The role involves designing electrical layouts for substations, cable route layouts, LV layouts, switch room and control room layouts, and site earthing layouts across two base locations (Sheffield and Leeds).
Responsibilities
 * Bring external services and connections to each item of plant or equipment.
 * Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of typical engineering documents (ENATS 41‑24, NGTS RES i3, NGTS 3.02.014 RES, NGTS 2.01 RES, NGTS 1, NGTS 3.01.02, BS 50522, BS 7430), G81 standards and DNO's approved equipment registers.
 * Contribute to production of specifications for major items of plant and equipment such as disconnectors, CTs, VT, SAs, PIs and circuit breakers.
 * Design equipment support structures for AIS electrical equipment from 66 kV to 400 kV, convey requirements to the manufacturer, review and approve manufacturers' drawings.
 * Produce bus‑bar calculations (short‑circuit forces, wind, ice loading) to determine optimal bus‑bar size and support requirements.
 * Create earthing layouts for sites at all voltage levels from first principles that can be verified by the earthing designer.
 * Produce site‑wide ducting/cabling layout drawings, coordinating requirements with other engineering disciplines.
 * Provide subject‑matter expertise and collaborate with engineers and designers across projects.
Qualifications
 * Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).
 * Previous experience in primary electrical design with a consultancy, contractor or utility in the power industry.
 * Experienced in the design of HV AC power systems.
 * Demonstrable experience producing electrical layout drawings for substations, switchrooms, control rooms and balance of plant projects, including 11 kV, 22 kV, 33 kV, 66 kV AIS, 132 kV AIS substations.
 * Understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications.
 * Ability to take initiative and demonstrate a pro‑active approach to activities and problems.
 * Understanding of cable installation types, their requirements and installation parameters (flexible or rigid arrangements, minimum bending radii, etc.).
 * Working knowledge of cable types and installation techniques from 11 kV to 132 kV (ideally up to 400 kV).
