Associate Director – Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) Services
Location: Edinburgh or Glasgow (Hybrid) Salary: £58,000–£65,000 (DOE) Hours: Full‑time (37.5 hrs) or flexible (min. 30 hrs)
A leading UK environmental consultancy is seeking an experienced professional to head up its Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) service in Scotland. This is a strategic leadership role within a multidisciplinary environment, offering the opportunity to shape, grow and deliver a high‑performing post‑consent service that integrates ecology, environmental management, planning, landscape and cultural heritage expertise.
The Opportunity
As Associate Director, you will lead the development and delivery of the EnvCoW service in Scotland. You’ll build and manage a team of site‑ and office‑based specialists, strengthen existing client relationships, and expand the service’s reach across the construction and development sector.
You will also play a key role in shaping the consultancy’s wider post‑consent offering, working closely with colleagues across multiple disciplines to deliver integrated, market‑leading environmental compliance and monitoring services.
Key Responsibilities
* Strategic Leadership
o Develop and deliver a clear vision for the EnvCoW service in Scotland
o Enhance existing service delivery and embed best practice
o Identify opportunities to expand geographic reach and diversify service offerings
o Contribute to the development of integrated post‑consent services across the business
* Client & Business Development
o Build strong relationships with clients, regulators and industry bodies
o Lead the development of a robust pipeline of opportunities
o Represent the consultancy at senior level within the EnvCoW and wider environmental sector
o Provide strategic advice on compliance, risk and programme‑level delivery
* Technical Leadership
o Oversee technical quality and compliance across EnvCoW projects
o Guide complex ecological and environmental risk management
o Support teams in resolving regulatory and stakeholder challenges
o Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice
* Collaboration & Integration
o Work closely with ecology, planning, landscape and heritage teams
o Lead or contribute to multidisciplinary projects
o Ensure environmental considerations are embedded in construction‑phase delivery

About You
Essential
* Extensive experience in EnvCoW or construction‑phase environmental management
* Strong understanding of compliance, licensing and environmental risk management
* Proven ability to lead complex projects or programmes
* Commercial awareness, including budgeting and forecasting
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
* Experience mentoring or supporting others
* Strategic thinker with strong problem‑solving skills
* Experience with large‑scale or linear infrastructure projects
* Full UK driving licence
Desirable
* Experience with private water supplies or water quality monitoring
* Experience working in remote or sensitive landscapes
* Relevant professional membership
